第一出 傍讶

【中吕过曲】【缕缕金】（丑上）

欢游罢，驾归来。

西宫因个甚，

恼君怀？

敢为春筵畔，

风流尴尬。

怎一场乐事陡成乖[1]？

教人好疑怪，

教人好疑怪。

前日万岁爷同杨娘娘游幸曲江，欢天喜地。不想昨日娘娘忽然先自回宫，万岁爷今日才回，圣情十分不悦。未知何故？远远望见永新姐来了，咱试问他。

（老旦上）

【前腔】

宫帏事[2]，

费安排。

云翻和雨覆，

蓦地闹阳台。

（丑见介）永新姐，来得恰好。我问你，万岁爷为何不到杨娘娘宫中去？

（老）唉，公公，你还不知么！

两下参商[3]后，

装幺作态。

（丑）为着甚来？

（老）只为并头莲傍有一枝开。

（丑）是那一枝呢？

（老笑介）公公，你聪明人自参解，

聪明人自参解。

（丑笑介）咱那里得知！永新姐，你可说与我听。

（老）若说此事，原是我娘娘自己惹下的。

（丑）为何？

（老）只为娘娘把那虢国夫人呵，

【剔银灯】

常则向君前暍采，

妆梳淡天然无赛。

那日在望春宫，

教万岁召他侍宴。

三杯之后，

便暗中筑座连环寨[4]，

哄结上同心罗带。

（丑拍手笑介）阿呀，咱也疑心有此。却为何烦恼哩？

（老）后来娘娘恐怕夺了恩宠，因此上嫌猜。

恩情顿乖，

热打对鸳鸯散开。

（丑）原来虢国夫人，在望春宫有了言语，才回去的。

（老）便是。那虢国夫人去时，我娘娘不曾留得。万岁爷好生[5]不快，今日竟不进西宫去了。娘娘在那里只是哭哩。

（丑）咱想杨娘娘呵，

【前腔】娇痴性天生忒利害。前时逼得个梅娘娘，直迁置楼东无奈。如今这虢国夫人，是自家的妹子，须知道连枝同气情非外，怎这点儿也难分爱。

（老）这且休提。只是往常，万岁爷与娘娘行坐不离，如今两下不相见面，怎生是好？

（丑）吾侪，如何布摆，

且和你从旁看来。

（内）有旨宣高公公。

（丑）来了。

狎宴临春[6]日正迟，韩偓

（老旦）宠深还恐宠先衰。罗虬

（丑）外头笑语中猜忌，陆龟蒙

（老旦）若问傍人那得知！崔颢

注释：

[1] 陡成乖：突然闹起别扭来。

[2] 宫帏事：宫帏，即宫闱，后妃所居的地方。宫帏事，指皇帝和后妃之间的事。

[3] 两下参商：两人意见不合，闹别扭。

[4] 筑座连环寨：军队分兵屯扎，以便互相呼应。这里用来比喻两相勾结。

[5] 好生：非常。

[6] 临春：南朝陈后主的宫殿名。

Scene 1 The Mystery

(Enter the eunuch Gao.)

Gao sings to the tune of “Thread on Thread of Gold”:

His Majesty has come back from his trip of pleasure.

How can he be displeased

With Lady Yang, his treasure?

Can it be at the vernal feast

Another gallantry

Overdone by His Majesty?

How can a pleasure change

Into displeasure? O how strange!

The day before yesterday the emperor went with Lady Yang to the River Bend in perfect bliss, but yesterday Lady Yang came back alone, while His Majesty only returned today, looking displeased. I wonder what the reason is. Here comes Ever Fresh.

I’ll try to ask her.

(Enter Ever Fresh.)

Ever Fresh sings to the tune of “Thread on Tread of Gold”:

In inner palace love afair’s

Beyond our cares.

One brings fresh shower

For the other’s thirsting flower.

Suddenly they upset the bower.

Gao (Greeting her): You’ve come just at the right time. I want to ask you why His Majesty has stopped coming to Lady Yang’s Western Palace.

Ever Fresh: Ah, don’t you know?

Since they two parted,

They have pretended cold-hearted.

Gao: What is the matter?

Ever Fresh: By their bedside

Another beauty would abide.

Gao: Who do you mean?

Ever Fresh: You are clever enough to guess

Who is the beauty in fine dress.

Gao: How could I know it? Tell me, please.

Ever Fresh: Well, it was Lady Yang herself who started the trouble.

Gao: How so?

Ever Fresh sings to the tune of “Silver Lantern”:

Before His Majesty she praised the duchess fair:

Though lightly powdered, her beauty’s beyond compare.

That day in the Vernal Palace she asked the emperor to send for the duchess.

After three cups of wind,

Without her knowledge, she

Drew them together with high glee.

The duchess’ girdle torn apart,

They’re tied up heart to heart.

Gao (Clapping his hands and laughing): I suspect so. Why then should Lady Yang be angry?

Ever Fresh: Then she was afraid that the duchess might take her place in the emperor’s affections.

Love turning into hate,

The lovebirds have to separate.

Gao: Then the duchess was offended and left?

Ever Fresh: Yes, when the duchess took her leave, Lady Yang did not ask her to stay, and the emperor was displeased. He has not been near her today and she is weeping.

Gao: I think Lady Yang carries matter too far.

Charming and jealous, she forced Lady Mume Flower To move reluctantly out to the Eastern Bower.

She and the duchess are two branches of one tree.

Why refuse to share royal favor out of jealousy?

Ever Fresh: Do not mention that! In the past the emperor never left Lady

Yang’s side, but now he is staying away from her. What can we do?

Gao: What can we do? Why, you and I

Can only watch while standing by.

(A voice offstage summons Gao.)

Gao: Coming.

Epilogue of the Scene

Gao: Enjoying vernal feast till it’s late, she’s afraid.

Ever Fresh: Imperial favor lavished too much would soon fade.

Gao: She wears a smiling face but is jealous at heart.

Ever Fresh: If you ask me, how could I know who stand apart?

(Exeunt.)
