朕乃大唐天宝皇帝是也。起自潛邸[8]。入缵[9]皇图。任人不二，委姚、宋[10]于朝堂；从谏如流，列张、韩于省闼[11]。且喜塞外风清万里，民间粟贱三钱。真个太平致治，庶几贞观[12]之年；刑措[13]成风，不减汉文之世。近来机务余闲，寄情声色。昨见宫女杨玉环[14]，德性温和，丰姿秀丽。卜兹吉日，册为贵妃。已曾传旨，在华清池赐浴，命永新、念奴伏侍更衣。即着高力士引来朝见，想必就到也。
【玉楼春】（丑扮高力士，二宫女执扇，引旦扮杨贵妃上）
恩波自喜从天降，
浴罢妆成趋彩仗。
（宫女）六宫未见一时愁[15]，
齐立金阶偷眼望。

奴婢高力士见驾。册封贵妃杨氏，已到殿门候旨。

（丑出介）万岁爷有旨，宣贵妃杨娘娘上殿。

[1] 端冕中天，垂衣南面：天下太平，无为而治。中天，喻盛世；南面，帝王的座位朝南，作统治解；端冕，帝王的冠服；垂衣，表示无为之治。

[22] 椒房：花椒果实繁多，象征多生男子，又且性质温暖，气味芳香，古时用来涂抹后妃居室的墙壁，所以称后妃居室为椒房。
[23] 赵家飞燕在昭阳：赵飞燕，汉成帝的皇后，她和妹妹昭仪曾长期受到成帝的宠幸，用来和杨贵妃相比。昭阳舍，原是赵昭仪所居的房子，此作后宫讲。
[24] 日绕龙鳞，云移雉尾：龙鳞，龙，指皇帝；雉尾，雉尾扇，皇帝仪仗队所用。
[25] 五云多处：相传天子所在的地方有五色的云彩。

Scene 2 The Pledge
(The Bright Emperor enters with two eunuchs.)
Emperor sings to the tuneof “The First Branch in the East Breeze”:
Wearing imperial crown
And dragon-broidered gown,
I’ve ruled this land with measure.
I shower favors with spring breeze;
My palace’s full of blooming trees.
Peace prevails far and near;
Prosperous is the year.
Why don’t I spend my days in pleasure?
To end my life in palace hall with love o’er flowed,
I would not envy gods above the cloud.
To our forbidden palace come best days:
In royal gardens trees shed vernal rays.
Heaven is pleased that happy times last long;
People enjoy peace and nothing goes wrong.
Nine Songs spread wide our government’s renown;
Six dances are performed in courtier’s gown.
I brought fresh shower for the Divine Flower
Ten nights ago in our Love-Making Bower.
I am the Bright Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. Third son to His Late Majesty, I succeeded to the throne thirty years ago.Since then I have appointed such able ministers as Yao and Song at my court and such wise conselors as Zhang and Han in the State Council. I am glad that they have well governed my empire as far as the frontier and my people have had good harvests from year to year. It is indeed the reign of peace as in the time of my grandfather, and the penal law has long been out of use as in the Golden Age of old. Lately I have spent my leisure enjoying music and beauty. I have noticed that a maid of honor named Jade Ring Yang is gentle and beautiful. Choosing this auspicious day I am making her my sovereign lady. I have ordered to give her a bath in the Hot Spring of the Flowery Pool, and told Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid to wait on her. My eunuch Gao should be bringing her here now.
(The eunuch Gao enters with two maids holding fan, who are leading Lady Yang.)
Lady Yang sings to the tune of “Spring in Jade Pavilion”:
I’m glad a wave of favor comes down from on high.
Dressed after bath, I’ll follow my lord by and by.
Maids sing, continuing the same tune:
On marble steps neglected ladies stand in line,
And peep with envious eyes at her beauty divine.
(They walk forward, and the eunuch Gao kneels before the emperor.)
Gao: Your slave Gao reports that the newly appointed Sovereign Lady Yang is at the palace gate, awaiting your pleasure, Sire.
Emperor: Send her in.
Gao (Turning back): His Majesty orders Lady Yang to the Audience Hall.
Lady Yang (Advancing and kneeling before the emperor): Your slave Jade Ring wishes a long, long life to Your Majesty.
Eunuch: You may rise.
Lady Yang: Born of a humble family and with common quality, I was fortunate enough to be chosen a maid of honor. Now I am exceedingly honored to be selected as sovereign lady, but I am afraid I cannot prove worthy of this high honor.
Emperor: You are born of an illustrious family and unequalled in character as well as in beauty. I am happy to have you serving in the palace.
Lady Yang (Curtseying): Long live Your Majesty!
Gao: You may rise.
(Lady Yang gets up.)
Emperor: Let the feast begin!
(As Gao passes on the order, music is heard offstage. Lady Yang offers wine to the Bright Emperor, and the maids hand a goblet to her. The emperor takes his seat in the center of the stage, and she sits beside him.)
Emperor sings to the tune of “Charm of Mindful Maid”:
For miles and miles all over the land,
I’ve looked for a beauty’s hand
To lead fair ladies in imperial hall.
Today the fairest of them all
Is sent me from on high;
She is truly matchless ‘neath the sky.
I’ll shower
My favor on her jasper bower,
And ennoble her in the Book of Jade;
She shall outshine my fairest palace maid.
All sing in chorus:
We wish that love
May reign below as long as above.
Lady Yang sings to the same tune:
Overwhelmed by your praise,
Long and deep I meditate.
Afraid my humble ways
Unworthy of such honor great.
Your sudden favors raise
Your slave from earth to sky.
I’d imitate
The heroine who would defy
Danger, or the lady historian moderate
Who would not ride
With her lord but stand
A pen in hand,
Ever at his side.
All sing in chorus:
We wish that love
May reign below as long as above!
Maids sing to the same tune:
Now we admire
The first lady in best attire
In palace of today,
Like Lady Swallow bathed in sunny ray.
The royal favor from now on
Will be lavished on her alone.
Do not decline!
Dressed up in golden bower,
You sing in jasper tower
And hand him brimming cups of wine
From spring to winter, rain or shine.
All sing in chorus:
We wish that love
May reign below as long as above!
Eunuchs sing to the same tune:
Let us look up!
The dragon-broidered robe bright as sunshine,
Like clouds waft pheasant feathers fine.
The Heaven’s Son delights in her new attire.
Drink cup on cup!
The vernal breeze sweetens the palace we admire.
The golden moon’s radiance displayed
And rainbow clouds spread like brocade!
The Heaven’s Son would bring fresh shower
In the evening for thirsting flower.
All sing in chorus:
We wish that love
May reign below as long as above!
Gao: May it please Your Majesty, the moon has risen.
(The table is cleared.)
Emperor: I’ll watch the moon from the courtyard with Lady Yang.(Music is heard offstage while the emperor leads Lady Yang forward, leaving the others in the background.)
Emperor sings to the tune of “Ancient Tower”:
I leave the hall gilded by lantern light
To gaze at her under the moon bright.
The courtyard flowers are not so fair
As her charming air.
She lowers her head and leans on my arms;
Her cloudlike hair casting shadow on her radiant dress
Sets of her charms
Really numberless. (Laughs gently.)
So happy I’m tonight
In vernal breeze and in moonlight,
I envy not the Southern King bringing fresh shower
To his dream lover in her nymphean bower.
Lady Yang continues to sing to the same tune:
From now on how happy am I
To serve my lord in feast with pleasure high!
On marble steps to him I cling,
Hearing his words breathe spring.
Fragrance floats from his retinue
My dress is moist with chilly dew.
I gaze till lovebirds rest
In palace eaves, in their nest.
Emperor: Attendants, lanterns! Light the way to the western palace!(Gao shouts assent. Eunuchs and maids carry lanterns to light the way.)
All sing to the same tune as above:
What splendor
To be escorted by ladies slender
And lanterns casting shade on shade!
Look back! We see the screens inlaid
With pearls and the Milky Way
Shedding flickering ray.
Through corridors everywhere
A perfume’s floating in the air.
How goes the night?
Above the bronze statue rides the moon bright.
You may enjoy your fill tonight.
Under canopies crimson and green
A pair of phoenixes amid the cloud are seen.
Songs of “Jade Tree” and “Jasper Flower”
And “Moonlit Spring River” are sung by all,
When the moon sinks behind the palace wall.
Let’s lift the silken screen!
Let drunken lovers enter their orchid-sweet bower!
Gao: May it please Your Majesty, we have reached the western palace.
Emperor: Attendants, leave us!
Gao: Through purple curtains the vernal breeze blows.
Eunuchs: From pearl-decked tower heavenly music flows.
Emperor continues to sing:
Flowers whisper in candlelight
To the moon over the casement bright
About our love on such a happy night.
All: Do not ask ladies of the other bowers
How they will pass their lonely hours.
(The maids bring fresh pyjamas to the emperor and Lady Yang,then retire. The emperor and Lady Yang sit down.)
Emperor: The candles shed silvery light on your silken dress.
Lady Yang: I have received imperial favors numberless.
Emperor: Tonight all other beauties may frown with sorrow.
Together: But all will sing of “New Treasure” tomorrow.
Emperor: I pronounce my vow that, from tonight on, I will live together with my dear lady forever and ever. (Taking from his sleeve an ornamental pin for her hair and a jewel case) I have brought you this gold pin and thisj ewel case to pledge our love.Let us love each other as long as we live.
Emperor sings to the tune of “Cotton Fluf ”:
This hairpin made of gold
And this case set with emerald,
I put them close to my heart as a treasure
Beyond measure.
Tonight I give you this pin for your cloudy hair
To make it look more fair,
And this case wrapped in a scarf to weave
Fragrance in your silken sleeve.
Like lovebirds on the pin together we may fly;
Our hearts become one like the case’s love-tie.
(Giving them to Lady Yang, who curtseys)
Lady Yang sings to the same tune:
I thank Your Majesty
For the hairpin and case carved with flower.
I fear my humble quality
Unworthy of the favor you shower.
(Looking at the gifts)
I peer at phoenix and dragon carved on the face
Of the golden case;
How I love the twin
Of gold hairpin!
May our love be as firm as gold in heart!
May the hairpin and case never be set apart!
Epilogue of the Scene
Emperor: The vernal moon shines on the blooming tree.
Lady Yang: It’s the first time you shower love on me.
Emperor: I’m long drunk with your beauty by my side.
Together: Happy from year to year, we’re satisfied.
(Exeunt.)
