Scene 2 Rivalry

(Enter the Duchess of Guo.)

Guo sings to the tune of “Strolling around the Pool”:

I followed in imperial train to River Bend;

I did not dream of royal favor in the end.

How can I not complain

Of the alluring blue bird?

I ponder over and again:

How could my heart not have been stirred?

How can my slandered sister tolerate

A rival beauty in the state?

“The jadelike swallow light

Plays with snow white;

She seeks her love in dream

On painted beam.”

My sister in the palace is a jealous one.

So do not fly to her bower bathed in the sun!

I am a daughter of Yang married into the Pei family. My husband died early and I would not allow my fragrance be stolen in my green bower. My sister Jade Ring used her influence to have me made Duchess of Guo. In spite of my high rank, I cared nothing for my toilet. Confident in my natural beauty, I dare go into the emperor’s presence with unpowdered face. When His Majesty visited the River Bend the other day,we were told to follow in his train. While my two sisters were feasted in the pavilion outside, I was summoned into the vernal palace to attend the emperor. Then I won his favor. Though the emperor is fond of me, I am afraid slanderers may speak against me. So when His Majesty asked me to accompany him to the palace yesterday, I declined the favor and came back.

When I think it over, I still feel how fortunate I was.

(Singing to the tune of “Word on Word in Brocade”):

This was a favor sent from high above;

It’s surely Fate that destined us to love.

The golden cage was open ‘neath the flower;

I was trapped like a phoenix in his bower.

Under the torches red

Wine flowed and cups were passed on tables spread.

With wine cups near,

The emperor whispered in my ear:

“Make haste!

There is no time to waste.”

Then I was led

To curtained bed.

In the curtained bed it would seem

Happy as in a dream.

He brought fresh shower

For my thirsting flower;

O We were so near heart to heart

That we would never part.

O We were so close to each other’s heart

That we would never part.

But in the morning when my sister came,

When my sister came,

She spoke behind

My back words unkind.

She jeered at me

And sneared at me.

With an injured air she put me into shame.

What could I do but shiver

With fear and quiver

And let her speak ill

Of me and do what she will.

(Enter Guo with attendants in the background.)

(Enter the Duchess of Han with attendants.)

Han sings to the tune of “Not the Way”:

If vernal breeze blows on all blooms with equal zest,

Why should one flower outdo all the rest?

The other day the Duchess of Guo was favored by the emperor, and today I asked my other sister, the Duchess of Qin, to come with me to see her. But Qin is sick with envy, so I must pay this visit alone.

Attendant: We have reached the Mansion of Guo, my lady.

Han: Go in and announce my arrival.

(The attendant goes in to announce her, and the Duchess of Guo comes out.)

(Guo retires with attendants in the background.)

Guo: Welcome, my dear sister.

(The attendants, jesting, retire.)

Han: I’ve come to congratulate you, darling.

Guo: On what ground?

Han: A special favored flower

Is reddened in imperial sunshine.

Guo (Blushing): What do you mean?

I entered the inner bower

Only to serve the emperor with cups of wine.

As for imperial favor and care,

In and out, we have equal share.

Han (Laughing): We all partook of the imperial feast, but what we had outside was not what you had inside the bower.

Do not deceive

Me on imperial favor you did receive!

O who could share with you

The vernal view?

Guo: It is not hard for you

To share your due.

Han: Let me ask you how is our younger sister Jade Ring?

Guo sings to the tune of “A Garden Full of Spring”:

With vernal river pleased

How happy we were all!

Urged to attend the feast,

I gazed on vernal hall.

Our sister Jade Ring, new-attired

Is more and more admired.

Han: How deep does His Majesty love her!

Guo: In vernal night,

In vernal night,

They are like flatfish left and right.

Who knows how one brings shower

For the other’s thirsting flower!

Han: Didn’t you get an inkling?

Guo: My impression is that she has become even more quick tempered than before.

I try to guess her mind

And see through what’s behind.

Charming and spoiled,

She was embroiled.

She would find faults with others night and day,

And she insists on having her own way.

Han: That has always been the case. You should try to talk to her about it, sister.

Guo: I’ve lost my patience with her.

Han: By nature she is proud

And will do what is not allowed.

Relying on inborn address,

She’s full of cleverness.

We, as her elder sisters, should

Not speak ill of her as we would.

In Sunny Bower,

In Sunny Bower

Alone on her, imperial favors shower.

None of three thousand ladies sweet

With her in beauty could compete.

Guo: I have not been competing with her. I’m only afraid that her behavior may make the emperor change his mind.

Han: She seems to be hinting at something.

I try to guess her mind

And see through what’s behind.

So full of pride,

She chides apart.

What does she hide?

There must be something in her heart.

(An attendant enters.)

Attendant: An important thing has happened, my ladies. Lady Yang has offended the emperor and Gao Lishi has been sent to take her back to the prime minister’s house.

Han: Can it be true?

Guo: I said her temper would get her into trouble.

Han: Even so, we are her sisters, and this may affect us too. I think we should go to see her.

Guo: You are right. Let us go together.

Han sings to the tune of “Epilogue”:

The sudden degradation fills my heart with fear.

Guo: Let’s drive our cars to hear

What says our sister dear!

What will Lady Mume Blossom think of it?

Together: Is it better to be the lonely Mume Blossom?

For she still blooms within the palace bower.

Epilogue of the Scene

Guo: Imperial order changes our sister’s fate.

Han: We’ve heard from palace door she comes to premier’s gate.

Guo: How can she forever in royal favor stay?

Han: How sad to see her rise and fall within a day!

(Exeunt.)
