Scene4 Stealing the Music

(Enter Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid carrying the musical score.)

(They sing to the tune of “Eight Beats of Ganzhou”.)

Ever Fresh: The score of “Dance in Rainbow Dress” is made.

Mindful Maid: It is copied at the window with gauge screen. Our lady with her voice like ringing jade

Has taught us to sing in dress green.

Ever Fresh: I am the old maid Ever Fresh.

Mindful Maid: I am the young Mindful Maid.

Ever Fresh: Since her Ladyship composed the musical score, she has taught us to sing. Today the Emperor is coming to Huaqing Palace to hear the music. We two are ordered to instruct Li Guinian so that he may train his orchestra in Chaoyuan Pavilion.

Mindful Maid: They have learned the overture. Today we may teach them the rhythmic prelude.

Ever Fresh: Look, the moonlight is water-clear. It is the best time for music. Let us take the score to the pavilion. (They walk forward.)

Together: The cool moon rises over the high roof here,

The warm breeze blows through curtain and screen.

The moonlight is crystal clear,

Just time to play the music taught by Fairy Queen. (Exit.)

(Enter Li Guinian the grey-bearded orchestra leader, singing to the tune of the Bait to “Attract Fish”):

Well-known to musicians old,

I am the leader of orchestra you behold.

I serve the emperor early and late,

Often summoned to cross the royal gate.

Li Guinian: I am Li Guinian, formerly a court musician, now made chief of the orchestra by the Emperor. Since Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid are ordered to teach us the music score of“Rainbow Dress” newly composed by her Ladyship, so that we may perform it in the Sunny Palace, we must rehearse it even if it is deep in the night. I have to call my musicians to the performance now. Hallo! Where are my fellow musicians?(Enter Ma Xianqi, stone-chime player.)

Ma: My music will delight fairies on high.

(Enter Lei Haiqing the lutist.)

Lei: No lutist on earth with me could vie.

(Enter He Huaizhi the white-bearded pipa player.)

He: My fame’s widespread, my pipa heard far and wide.

(Enter Huang Fanchuo the clapper-player.)

Huang: My clappers will resound from earth to sky.

All (Greeting Li): Good evening, sir.

Li: Good evening, my fellow musicians.

The royal order’s to rehearse

At once the Rainbow Dress’s verse.

Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid

Are waiting for the music to be played

With the well-written music score

They’re waiting for us at the moonlit palace door.

All: Then let us go.

Li: Please go with me. (They walk together.)

All: As the water clock slowly drips in the cool night,

Let’s learn to play the new melody bright. (Exeunt.)

(Enter Li Mo the flutist.)

Li Mo (Singing to the tune of “Sober Thrice from Wine”):

Young as I am in spirits high,

I’m deeply drowned in music sweet.

Tonight in fairy land near-by

New melodies attract my feet.

I’m Li Mo born on the Southern Rivershore and now I’m visiting the capital. Having learned music while young, I am known for my skill in playing the iron flute. It is said that a melody of “Rainbow Dress” is newly composed in the palace and the chief of orchestra is performing it in the Sunny Palace from night to night. How can I get the music score I like so much? It is said the hall where the rehearsal takes place stands by the palace wall, and the music can be heard from without.

Why don’t I take my iron flute and go to the summer palace so as to listen to the music under the moon? While walking along the way, I wish the music would be as beautiful as moonlight.

(Walking on)

The evening mist clears over the woods far and nigh;

The hall stands out against the moonlight-spangled sky.

What a sublime scene!

(Singing to the tune of “Eight Beats of Ganzhou”):

I seem to walk from screen to screen.

(A red curtain hangs in the background in lieu of the palace wall with a tower behind.)

I seem to have come near the palace wall without my knowledge.

(Singing to the tune of “Approaching Time”)

I see against the cloud

The palace proud

Maginificent and bright

In the moonlight.

Magnificent and bright

In the moonlight.

Majestic bowers rise

As earthly paradise.

The maids of honor fair as jade

Are leaning on the balustrade.

It is said that the music bower lies at the west end of the royal garden. I will wind my way along the red wall to go there.

(Walking on)

In the shade of flowering trees

I go on the royal path with ease.

(He looks round.)

I see a building tall

Outside the crimson wall.

It must be the place.

I stretch my eyes and gaze,

I stretch my eyes and gaze.

What have I seen

But painted curtain and window screen?

Which seem hazy like dream.

Just look ahead

Is it not a lantern red?

(The maids enter the tower on the other side of the wall.)

Li (From the other side oft he wall): Let us rehearse the first movement today. But we should first rehearse the overture once more.

Li Mo: See lanterns are lit and voices can be dimly heard. It must be here that they rehearse the music. Let me listen without their

knowledge. (Listening)

(Singing to the tune of “Double Crimson Song”)

I’ll listen to the music from the hall

Secretly in the shade of palace wall.

(Music is played inside and Li Mo takes out his flute.)

I’ll play my flute to accompany the music so that I may keep the notes in memory.

After the first watch the moon rises high;

The stringed instruments begin to vie

To give to the forbidden garden delight

In the deep of still night.

How much I like the vibrating string

And the instruments sing!

I’ll learn this part of melody by heart.

I’ll learn this part of melody by heart.

(Ten instruments play music inside and Li Mo blows his flute to accompany it. When it stops, the maids sing a chorus and Li Mo plays the flute again.)

Maids (Singing to the tune of “Eyebrows Pencilled”):

Like scattered pearls we strike clear notes,

Which waft like cloud on cloud that floats.

We dance like snow in flight,

Whirling in the soft breeze.

We dance like snow in flight,

Whirling in the soft breeze.

With eyebrows painted light

We dance with ease.

Li Mo: I’ve marked this part of music score,

And that part as before.

(Ten instruments play music inside, and the maids sing the chorus and Li Mo plays on his flute to accompany it.)

Maids (Singing to the tune of “Eyebrows Pencilled”):

Splendid with emeralds and pearls bright

As phoenixes soar and then alight

Atop the enchanted mountain of jade,

A fairy waves her sleeves to call her maid,

A fairy waves her sleeves to call her maid,

Green Flower turns her head

To beacon Jasper Red.

Li Mo: I’ve marked this part of music score

And that part as before.

(The ten instruments play music inside, while the maids sing the chorus. Li Mo plays on his flute to accompany it.)

Maids (Singing to the tune of “Eyebrows Pencilled”):

All strings and pipes participate

In melodies swirling and intricate.

As floating clouds alight,

We cease our dance and drop our sleeves light.

As floating clouds alight,

We cease our dance and drop our sleeves light.

Our echoed songs soar high

Into the azure sky.

Li Mo: I’v marked this part of music score

And that part as before.

(The ten instruments play music inside, and the maids go out.) Li Mo: How wonderful is the music! It is like the breeze whispering in autumn bamboos or snow swirling over vernal ice. Obviously it is music divine and not human. Fortunately I have caught it with my flute. How lucky I am!

(Singing to the tune of “Geese and Duck on Ferry Boat”):

The song of Rainbow Dress coming from the sky

Is heard behind the wall by passers-by.

Its cadance clear and melody please,

Rise and fall with the breeze.

I’ve captured them all in my flute.

Now why is the palace mute?

Perhaps the musicians will play no more.

They are leaving the palace door.

In the waning moonlight over the wall of the bowers

Are shivering the shadows of the flowers.

You see the moon is sinking and the Dipper seems to bar the Silver River in the sky. It is time for me to go back now.

(Singing to the tune of “Epilogue”):

Turning away

Towards my homeward way,

I hear the rippling river clear

Sing the “Rainbow Dress” to my ear. (Exit.)

Epilogue of the Scene

Over sky-scraping palace shines the moon bright;

Songs fly as high as the cloud in the tranquil night.

Having stolen newly-composed music fine,

I’ll play it on my flute in the shop of wine.
