光分素劄[3];

倚长袖香肩并亚[15];

Scene2 Recording the Music

(Enter the maid Ever Fresh.)

Ever Fresh sings to the tune of “Drinking Song”:

The Western Palace orders me to clean

And give the lakeside hall a pleasant look.

‘Neath rainbow clouds I roll up crystal screen;

The morning sun seems to hang on jade hook.

I am Ever Fresh waiting on Lady Yang with Mindful Maid in the west palace. Since her return the emperor has shown her greater favor than ever.

On her alone is lavished royal love and care;

She has outshone in six palaces all faces fair.

This morning I am ordered to prepare Lotus Bower for use so that music may be composed here. Mindful Maid is helping Her Ladyship at her dressing table and I have come to set out the four writing utensils.

The brush-stand’s bright

As paper white.

The inkstone drinks

The fresh-ground inks.

What a secluded scene in the shade so green!

(Chonging to the tune of “End of the Song”)

The breeze blowing through the bamboo grove wrinkles The fragrant screen;

The lotus sprinkles

Dew and makes quiver

The surface of the river.

I can smell musk and hear the tinkle of jade pendants. Here comes Her Ladyship.

Lady Yang sings to the tune of “New Lotus Leaves”:

I dreamed last night of visiting the moon;

Of “Rainbow Skirt and Feathered Coat” I heard the tune.

Awake, I seem to hear the music and the song;

I’ll write it down to pass the summer day so long.

I pencil my slender eyebrows dark or light as I will,

Which spreads out in the mirror like a distant hill.

The morning sun shines on my rouged face

Like a rosy cloud melting into my cheeks with grace.

Since I won back the emperor’s love by cutting off a lock of hair, he has lavished more favor on me than before. As I often heard him praise the “Scared Swan’s Dance” performed by Lady Mume Blossom, I wish to outdo her by a new one. Last night I dreamed of entering the Moon Palace, where I saw under the laurel tree beautiful fairies in red and white playing delightful music. When I woke up, the melody still lingered in my ears.

So I order Ever Fresh to clean the Lotus Bower so that I might compose music for a new dance.

Ever Fresh: The four writing utensils are ready for use, my lady.

Lady Yang: You and Mindful Maid may stay here.

(Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid wave the fan or burn incense while Lady Yang composes music.)

Lady Yang sings to the tune of “Prelude to the Dance” :

The lotus’ scent perfumes the window screen.

I straighten the paper white

And take a brush to write

Down what in the Moon Palace I have heard and seen.

I will reveal

What in my heart I feel.

But the transition is not natural. How could I rearrange the words to make them harmonious word by word, stanza by stanza?

How to improve the feet

Lest they are out of beat?

(Orioles sing behind the scene, and Lady Yang listens, brush in hand.) Ah, I’ve got it.

(She corrects the score and sings to the tuneof “Jadelike Lotus”):

The trilling of the orioles, indeed,

Is just what I need.

(Putting down her brush)Now the music is composed. What time is it, Ever Fresh?

Ever Fresh: It is just noon.

Lady Yang: Has His Majesty returned from the court?

Ever Fresh: Not yet.

Lady Yang: Come with me, Ever Fresh, to help me make my toilet. You wait here, Mindful Maid, and tell me as soon as His Majesty comes.

Mindful Maid: Yes, Your Ladyship.

Lady Yang: I will repaint my eyebrows and try

To change into a gown fragrant with butterfly.

(Lady Yang goes out with Ever Fresh.)

(The emperer enters and sings to the tune of “Fishing Lantern”)

Having dismissed the courtiers who have done their duty,

I leave the court to see my beauty

To while away

The long, long day.

Having returned to palace rooms,

I’m told she’s in the Hall of Lotus Blooms.

So I follow the flowing stream

Along the poolside way

To find the fairy of my dream. (Arrives.)

Mindful Maid (Courtseys): Ah, Your Majesty.

Emperor: Where is your mistress, Mindful Maid?

Is she at play?

Why on the desk are brush and paper laid?

Mindful Maid: Her Ladyship has composed music here and has just left for dressing up.

Emperor: My darling, my darling! You have the accomplish-ments all beautiful ladies crave for. I don’t know you are good at composing music, and I would like to have a look.

(He sits down to read the score.)

From the beginning I will read the score.

What delicate notation! How can I not adore?

It is so wonderful that I can never

Find out the faintest dissonance whatever.

How strange it is! I have never heard this tune before. On examining it, the melody seems unearthly. Could it come down from heaven? Such music cannot find its equal on earth. Oh, my darling! You are not only beautiful but also ingenious without a peer.

(Singing to the tune of “Jadelike Lotus”)

Even in intelligence you outshine all

The beauties in imperial palace hall.

Lady Yang (Entering in an evening dress, attended by Ever Fresh, sings to the tune of “Universal Joy”):

I’ve changed into a graceful dress so light

And the silk tunic makes it look more bright.

(Curtseying) Long live Your Majesty!

Emperor (Holding her to rise): Sit down, please. (She takes a seat.) Your evening dress adds to your beauty,

Just like a willow swaying in the breeze,

Or a lotus blooming on the waves with ease.

With a sweet orchid slanting in your hair,

Your face would charm down fairies in the air.

Lady Yang: Why has Your Majesty come late from the court today?

Emperor: As the important position of governor of Lingwu is vacant and must be filled up, I discussed for long with the courtiers and finally I decided to promote Guo Ziyi to the post. So I was delayed at court.

Lady Yang: As I was waiting for Your Majesty alone at Lotus Bower,I saw the window screen rippled by a breeze light,

Inspiring me with a new tune I tried to write,

(Singing to the tune of “Jadelike Lotus”)

But it can’t match “Sacred Swan’s Dance,”

Brightening at the end of the dance all the faces.

Emperor: I have just read your score which is indeed incomparable and leaves the “Scared Swan’s Dance” far behind.

Lady Yang: It was written in haste and I’m afraid it leaves much to be desired. I hope Your Majesty will kindly check it over.

Emperor: All right, I’ll go through it carefully with you.

(The maids go out. The emperor sits down with Lady Yang to read the music. He sings to the tune of “Rosy-faced Maid”):

I caress her long sleeves, we sit shoulder to shoulder,

Turning the music score, hand in hand I hold her.

A tune like this leaves nothing to be desired

How on earth could it not be admired?

Will you please tell me what is the name of this score?

Lady Yang: Last night I dreamed of going up to the moon, where I saw a group of fairies playing music in rainbow colored dress,so I would like to call it “Dance in Rainbow Dress”.

Emperor: This music score does not belie

Its name, as sweet as laurels in the sky.

(Looking at her and singing to the tune of “Jadelike Lotus”):

You who compose this divine tune

Must once have been a fairy of the moon.

This score should be given to the conservatory at once, but I am afraid our musicians could not fully appreciate its beauty,so I would like to have Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid copy this script under your personal guidance. Then it may be given to Li Guinian of the imperial orchestra so that his musicians may learn how to play the music. What do you think of it?

Lady Yang: What Your Majesty says shall be done.

Emperor (Holding her to rise): The dusk is setting in. Let us go back to the palace.

(Singing to the tune of “Epilogue”)

The evening breeze begins to blow;

The crescent moon is hanging low.

Lady Yang: The imperial court is growing cool.

Emperor: See the love birds in pair sleep on the pool.

Epilogue of the Scene

Emperor: My beauty’s face outshines the lotus flower.

Lady Yang: The breeze through willows chills waterside bower.

Ever Fresh: A happy song is heard the flowers to caress:

Together:Call the musicians to sing the “Rainbow Dress.” (Exeunt.)
