自小生来貌天然,花面;

忽逢小监在阶前,胡缠;

Scene5 The Bath

(A maid of honor enters.)

Funny Maid (Singing to the tune of “Words in Couple”):

I was born with natural grace,

Though with a pockmarked face.

I am the first maid of honor, first of all,

To sweep the palace hall.

I try to flirt with a eunuch above,

But he cannot make love.

I put into his pants my hand,

But find him not a husband.

I am the first maid of honor on duty;

No other maids can rival me in beauty.

My cheeks are smeared with powder white,

My lips with rouge too bright.

As two bronze balls my eyes are fine;

My arched brows form a straight line.

Each of my fingers looks like a drumstick,

My skin like coarse varnish thick.

My willowy waist is too heavy to take a seat,

As big as boats are my lotus-like feet.

Lady Yang who loved my wit

Chose me to dance a bit,

But my voice is as loud

As thunder from the cloud.

In dance I turned the table upside down,

Which annoyed the imperial crown,

Who forbade me to dance and sing,

And sent me to the palace in Warm Spring.

The emperor came with Lady Yang yesterday,

And by the Flower-Clear Pool they would stay.

They are going to take a bath today,

And I am ordered to sweep the pathway.

Here come another maid.

(Another maid enters.)

Second Maid (Singing to the tune of “Swan Dance”):

Who knows the grief

Of palace maid lonely beyond belief?

What is the use even if we beat

The breast and stamp the feet!

Oh, who would care

For a lonely swan dancing there?

(Greeting the first maid.)

Maid: Dear sister, what dancing swan are you singing about? Now the emperor would enjoy Lady Yang’s Rainbow Dance, caring not at all for the Swan Dance of Lady Mume Blossom.

Second Maid:It is true.I used to wait on Lady Mume Blossom who, angered after coming back from the Emerald Bower, fell ill and died. And I was sent to do service here.

Maid: If that is the case, I am afraid the jealous Lady Yang would not let us have any chance with the emperor.

Second Maid: But I won’t care.

Maid: His Majesty will soon be here. It would be better for us to wait outside. (Exeunt.)

(A eunuch leads in the emperor and Lady Yang with her two maids.)

Emperor (Singing to the tune of “Flowers of Four Seasons”):

Look! The pleasure palace has cloudlike beam,

And like raindrops is uprolled the pearl screen.

Red railings wind along the picturesque stream,

And corridor on corridor leads to mountains green.

They stretch along the crimson wall

To the jade gate of palace hall.

Eunuch: May it please Your Majesty, here is the Warm Spring.

Emperor: Leave us. (The eunuch withdraws.) See:

In the pool ripples water clear

So fragrant, soft and soothing to the skin, my dear.

Let us take a bath.

(The maids help them to take of their garments.)

When you take of your cloudlike dress,

I see your beauty bright as jade.

How can I not love you, caress

And cherish you lest it should fade.

(The emperor goes out with Lady Yang.)

Ever Fresh: Dear sister, you see how much our lord loves our lady.

Don’t you feel envious?

Mindful Maid: Yes, I do.

Ever Fresh (Singing to the tune of “Phoenix Hairpin”):

Hand in hand by day, cheek to cheek by night,

They have enjoyed love’s all delight.

Mindful Maid (Singing to the tune of “Surpassing Flowers”):

She follows him like a shadow true;

They can’t be parted as water can’t be cut in two.

Each thinks of the other’s part;

They seem to have only one heart.

No tongue can tell with how much love they’re fed;

No word can describe their lovebirds’ bed,

Where they’d enjoy their fill

And their love blazes still.

Ever Fresh: Dear sister, we have waited on Lady Yang for years, yet we have never seen her Ladyship’s naked beauty. Why not take a peep through the curtain today?

Mindful Maid: Yes, just take a peep.

(They peep through the curtain.)

Both (Singing to the tune of “Red Flowers on Water”):

We take a peep at her body slender,

Floating like lotus flower tender

With sweet impearled dew

Shining in fascinating hue.

She moves her arms like a fairy queen,

And her willowy waist in water green,

And her breast blooming like double flower.

Ever Fresh: See her private vernal bower!

Mindful Maid:Spring hides there where our lord would bring fresh shower.

Bewitched, he fixes on her his smiling eyes

As if crazy for her he sighs.

Both (Singing to the tune of “A Billet Doux”):

Not only maids of honor would lose their soul,

But even our lord would his self-control.

Ever Fresh: They would bathe till the spring goes dry,

Mindful Maid: Or till they’ve washed clean Jade Mountain high.

Ever Fresh: He never stops kissing her shoulder.

Mindful Maid: In long embrace he would hold her.

Ever Fresh: Our lady, silent, smiles with ease.

Mindful Maid: Our lord seems drunk with vernal breeze.

Ever Fresh: They frolic in warm water bright

Like two love-birds in warm sunlight.

Both: Until the lover’s drunk in moonlit bower

And the beloved comes back after the vernal shower.

(Two other maids come in and laugh.)

Maids: Dear sisters, you are happy in having fun. Why not let us take a look?

Both: We are waiting on Lady Yang as she takes her bath. What is funny to see?

Maids: You are not just waiting on Lady Yang, we are afraid, but also taking a good look at the emperor.

Both: Silence! Here come His Majesty and Lady Yang.

(The maids go out. The emperor and Lady Yang enter.)

Emperor: Coming out of the pool, we feel so tired and cool.

I see your jadelike face with still more grace.

Your look more fair with disheveled hair,

Which is so clean as evening cloud is green.

(Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid dress them.)

(Lady Yang looks tired and the two maids support her.)

Emperor: Like drooping willow in the breeze,

You stand as a flower in fear of dew.

You look so tired and cannot walk with ease;

You need your maids to support you.

(Two eunuchs enter with a pleasure carriage and its driver.)

Eunuchs: May it please Your Majesty, the carriage is ready to take you back to the Palace.

Emperor: Let the carriage follow us.

Eunuchs: Yes, Your Majesty.

Emperor: Let us go side by side and hand in hand with ease.We need no carriage in the balmy breeze.

(Singing together with Lady Yang):

I am in love with you

And you in love with me.

Even the love-birds in view

Are lovesick of the blooming tree.

Epilogue of the Scene

Emperor: Flowers exhale their fragrance cool.

Lady Yang: We’ve come out of the Warm Spring Pool.

Emperor: You are too tired to raise your head.

Lady Yang: We laugh to lean on royal bed.

(Exeunt.)
