“玉楼天半起笙歌，

风送宫嫔笑语和。

月殿影开闻夜漏，

水晶帘卷近秋河。”

咱家高力士，奉万岁爷之命，着咱在御花园中安排小宴，要与贵妃娘娘同来游赏，只得在此伺候。

（生、旦乘辇，老旦、贴随后，二内侍引，行上）

天淡云闲，

列长空数行新雁。

御园中秋色斓斑：

柳添黄，

减绿，

红莲脱瓣。

一抹雕阑，

喷清香桂花初绽。（到介）

（丑）请万岁爷娘娘下辇。

（生）妃子，朕与你散步一回者。

（旦）陛下请。（生携旦手介）

南【泣颜回】（旦）

携手向花间，

暂把幽怀同散。

凉生亭下，

风荷映水翩翻。

爱桐阴静悄，

碧沉沉并绕回廊看。

恋香巢秋燕依人，

睡银塘鸳鸯蘸眼[1]。

（生）高力士，将酒过来，朕与娘娘小饮数杯。

（丑）宴已排在亭上，请万岁爷娘娘上宴。

（旦作把盏，生止住介）妃子坐了。

北【石榴花】

不劳你玉纤纤高捧礼仪烦，

子待借小饮对眉山[2]。

俺与你浅斟低唱互更番，

三杯两盏，遣兴消闲。

妃子，今日虽是小宴，倒也清雅。回避了御厨中，回避了御厨中烹龙炰凤堆盘案，咿咿哑哑乐声催趱。只几味脆生生，只几味脆生生蔬和果清肴馔，雅[3]称你仙肌玉骨美人餐。妃子，朕与你清游小饮，那些梨园旧曲，都不耐烦听他。记得那年在沉香亭上赏牡丹，召翰林李白草《清平调》三章，令李龟年度成新谱，其词甚佳。不知妃子还记得么？

（旦）妾还记得。

（生）妃子可为朕歌之，朕当亲倚玉笛以和。

（旦）领旨。

（老旦进玉笛，生吹介）

（旦按板介）

南【泣颜回】【换头】

花繁，秾艳想容颜。

云想衣裳光璨。

新妆谁似，

可怜飞燕娇懒。

名花国色，

笑微微常得君王看。

向春风解释春愁，

沉香亭同倚阑干。

（生）妙哉，李白锦心，妃子绣口，真双绝矣。宫娥，取巨觞来，朕与妃子对饮。

（老旦、贴送酒介）（生）

北【斗鹌鹑】

畅好是[4]喜孜孜驻拍停歌，

喜孜孜驻拍停歌，

笑吟吟传杯送盏。

妃子干一杯，（作照干介）

不须他絮烦烦射覆藏钩[5]，

闹纷纷弹丝弄板。

（又作照杯介）妃子，再干一杯。

（旦）妾不能饮了。

（生）宫娥每，跪劝。

（老旦、贴）领旨。

（跪旦介）娘娘，请上这一杯。

（旦勉饮介）

（老旦、贴作连劝介）

（生）我这里无语持觞仔细看，

早子见花一朵上腮间。

（旦作醉介）妾真醉矣。

（生）一会价软咍咍柳亸花欹[6]，

软咍咍柳亸花欹，

困腾腾莺娇燕懒。

妃子醉了，宫娥每，扶娘娘上辇进宫去者。

（老旦、贴）领旨。

（作扶旦起介）

（旦作醉态呼介）万岁！

（老旦、贴扶旦行）（旦作醉态介）

南【扑灯蛾】态恹恹轻云软四肢，

影少濛濛空花乱双眼，

娇怯怯柳腰扶难起，

困沉沉强抬娇腕，

软设设金莲倒褪，

乱松松香肩嚲云鬟，

美甘甘思寻凤枕，

步迟迟，倩宫娥搀入绣帏间。

（老旦、贴扶旦下）

（丑同内侍暗上）

（内击鼓介）

（生惊介）何处鼓声骤发？

（副净急上）“渔阳鼙鼓动地来，

惊破霓裳羽衣曲。”

（问丑介）万岁爷在那里？

（丑）在御花园内。

（副净）军情紧急，不免迳入。

（进见介）陛下，不好了。安禄山起兵造反，杀过潼关，不日就到长安了。

（生大惊介）守关将士何在？

（副净）哥舒翰兵败，已降贼了。（生）

北【上小楼】呀，你道失机的哥舒翰……

称兵的安禄山，

赤紧的离了渔阳，

陷了东京，破了潼关。

唬得人胆战心摇，

唬得人胆战心摇，

肠慌腹热，

魂飞魄散，

早惊破月明花粲。

卿有何策，可退贼兵？

（副净）当日臣曾再三启奏，禄山必反，陛下不听，今日果应臣言。事起仓卒，怎生抵敌？不若权时幸蜀，以待天下勤王[7]。

（生）依卿所奏。快传旨，诸王百官，即时随驾幸蜀便了。

（副净）领旨。（急下）

（生）高力士，快些整备军马。传首令右龙武将军陈元礼，统领羽林军士三千，扈驾[8]前行。

（丑）领旨。（下）

（内侍）请万岁爷回宫。

（生转行叹介）唉，正尔欢娱，不想忽有此变，怎生是了也！

南【扑灯蛾】稳稳的官庭宴安，

扰扰的边廷造反。

冬冬的鼙鼓喧，

腾腾的烽火黫。

的溜扑碌臣民儿逃散，

黑漫漫乾坤覆翻，

碜磕磕[9]社稷摧残，

碜磕磕社稷摧残。

当不得萧萧飒飒西风送晚，

黯黯的，一轮落日冷长安。

（向内问介）宫娥每，杨娘娘可曾安寝？

（老旦、贴内应介）已睡熟了。

（生）不要惊他，且待明早五鼓同行。

（泣介）天那，寡人不幸，遭此播迁，累他玉貌花容，驱驰道路。

好不痛心也！

南【尾声】

在深宫兀自娇慵惯，

怎样支吾蜀道难！

（哭介）我那妃子呵，愁杀你玉软花柔要将途路趱。

宫殿参差落照间，卢纶

注释：

[1] 蘸（zhàn）眼：耀眼，引人注目。

[2] 子待借小饮对眉山：子待，只待、只要。眉山，眉毛，与前句玉手高捧，暗合“举案齐眉”的典故。

[3] 雅：甚。

[4] 畅好是：正好是。

[5] 射覆藏钩：射覆，类似猜（射）字谜的一种酒令；藏鈎，猜东西藏在谁那儿的一种游戏。

[6] 一会价软咍咍柳亸花欹：一会价，一会儿。软咍（hāi）咍，软绵绵。亸（duǒ），垂下。柳、花和下句莺、燕都用来比杨贵妃。

[7] 勤王：朝廷有难，各地起兵去援救。

[8] 扈驾：随驾。

[9] 碜（cǎn）磕（kē）磕：或作碜可可。磕磕，不表示意义。碜，惨的同音异写。悲惨、惨痛的意思。

[10] 遏（è）云：停住了行云。形容音乐的美妙。

[11] 何处黄云是陇山：陇山，在陕西、甘肃一带，由长安往成都，经陇山东麓而南行。

Scene 2 The Alarm

(Enter Gao Lishi.)

Gao: Music and flute songs come from jade palace in mid-air.Interwoven with laughter of maidens fair.

From moonlit bower waterclock can be heard clear;

Pearl screen uprolled, the Silver River seems so near.

I am Gao Lishi. By the emperor’s order I have prepared an intimate feast in the imperial garden for His Majesty and Her Ladyship, and I am waiting here.

(Enter the emperor and Lady Yang in a carriage, followed by Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid. Two eunuchs usher them in.) Emperor (Singing to the tune of “Pink Butterflies”):

Free clouds float in the azure sky;

In rows the new-coming wild geese fly.

In royal garden the golden autumn grieves

And yellows willow leaves.

The duckweed’s lost its green

And red lotus its sheen.

Beyond the painted balustrade

No fragrant laurel flowers will fade.

Gao: May it please Your Majesty to alight with Your Ladyship?(The emperor descends from the carriage with Lady Yang. Gao retires with other eunuchs.)

Emperor: Let us take a stroll here, my dear.

Lady Yang: Yes, Sire. (The emperor takes her hand.)

Hand in hand we stroll among flowers

To while away leisurely hours.

The pavilion turns cool,

When the breeze blows over lotus blooms in the pool.

I love the calm in the shade of plane trees,

Winding along the green corridor with ease.

The autumn swallows love their fragrant nest;

The love-birds on silver waves take their rest.

Emperor: Gao Lishi, bring wine here. I will drink a few cups with Her Ladyship.

Gao: The feast is spread in the pavilion. Will it please Your Majesty to step over there?

(Lady Yang starts to pour out wine, but the emperor stops her.)

Emperor: Sit down, my dear. (Singing to the tune of “Pomeg-ranite Flower”):

On ceremony you need not stand,

Nor present wine with your own hand.

Let us drink two or three cups face to face,

To while away the time with grace.

Though a simple meal, it is more agreeable than a sum-ptuous feast prepared by the imperial kitchen. I prefer fresh vegetables more suitable for a beauty than a table piled up with dainty food and accompaniment of palace music. I would not hear the old tunes played by palace musicians in our intimate meal. Do you still remember the three stanzas written by Li Bai and set to music by Li Guinian while we were enjoying peony flowers in Fragrant Pavilion? The poem is well written.

Lady Yang: Yes, I do.

Emperor: Will you sing it for me while I play an accompani-ment on my jade flute?

Lady Yang: With great pleassure, Your Majesty.

(Ever Fresh brings the jade flute to the emperor who starts to play on it.)

(Singing to the tune of “Weeping a Scholar”)

In flower’s grace

We see her face,

And in the rainbow cloud

The dress of which she’s proud

Who can with her compare?

Only the new-dressed Lady Swallow fair.

A flower which beguiles

The monarch with her smiles.

If you ask why his love won’t fade?

See them lean on the pavilion’s balustrade.

Emperor: Beautiful. The poet’s beautiful verse can only be matched by your beautiful voice.

Maids, bring a large cup. (The maids pour wine.)

(Singing to the tune of “Fighting Quails”):

How happy she is ending her song!

How happy she is ending her song!

How happy I am offering her wine along!

Drink this cup, my dear. (Drinking a cup with her)

We need no help from drinking merriment,

Nor from musical instrument.

(Drinking to her again) Now another cup.

Lady Yang: I cannot drink any more.

Emperor: Maids, come and offer wine.

Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid: Yes, Your Majesty.

(Kneeling to Lady Yang)

Will it please Your Ladyship to drink another cup?

(Lady Yang forces herself to drink and the maids urge her again.)

Emperor: I watch her, cup in hand, with silent eyes,

And see rosy cloud on her cheeks rise.

Lady Yang (Tipsy): I am really drunk.

Emperor: She is now tender as flower or willow tree,

Now tender as flower or willow tree,

Now weary as a swallow or oriole free.

Her Ladyship is drunk. Maids, help her to the carriage and go back to the palace.

Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid: Yes, Your Majesty.

Lady Yang (Drunkenly): Oh, Your Majesty. (The maids help her up.)

(Singing to the tune of “Moth in a Candle Flame”):

I feel my limbs as soft as clouds are white,

And my eyes dazzled by shade and light.

My willowy waist is limp, though full of charm;

I am too tired to raise my arm.

The ground slips away where my feet are led,

My hair in disorder outspread,

I seek my pillow to lay down my head;

Slowly my maids help me to my curtained bed.

(Exit with the support of Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid.)

(Enter Gao Lishi with other eunuchs. Drums are heard in the distance.)

Emperor (Startled): From where come the drumbeats?

(Enter Prime Minister Yang Guozhong hastily.)

Yang: The rebels beat their war drums making the earth quake,

And dance and songs of “Rainbow Dress break”.

(To Gao): Where is His Majesty?

Gao: In the imperial garden.

Yang: The situation is urgent. I must go in at once.

(Seeing the emperor) Your Majesty, urgent news! An Lushan rising in revolt has taken the Western Pass. His army is marching on to he capital.

Emperor (Alarmed): What about the garrison of the Western Pass?

Yang: General Geshu Han, defeated, has surrendered.

Emperor (Singing to the tune of “Mounting the Attic”):

You say Geshu Han’s wrong,

He has surrendered to An’s army strong.

They’ve left Yuyang, alas!

And broken through the Western Pass.

How can I not tremble with broken heart!

How can I not tremble with broken heart!

What is to be done on our part?

The moon’s no longer bright,

The flowers in sad plight.

What would you do to beat back the rebels?

Yang: I have warned Your Majesty again and again that An Lushan would revolt sooner or later, but Your Majesty would not believe.Now my prediction has come true. But what could we do without preparations at all! I would advise Your Majesty to withdraw to the west and wait till loyal forces come to restore the royalty.

Emperor: Do as you suggest, and give orders for princes and ministers to be ready for the western withdrawal.

Yang: Yes, Your Majesty. (Hurrying out)

Emperor: Gao Lishi, get horses ready and give orders to General Chen Yuanli in command of the Imperial Guards to despatch three thousand men as royal escort.

Gao: Yes, Your Majesty. (Exit.)

Eunuchs: May it please Your Majesty to return to the palace?

Emperor (Turning back, sighing): What surprise in such a happy moment! What else can be done?

(Singing to the tune of “Moth in a Candle Flame”)

A happy feast in palace hall is broken by a bolt

From the blue, rebels on the frontier come in revolt.

We hear the drumbeats loud,

And see the beacon fire rise to the cloud.

People are fleeing from the town;

The empire is turned upside down;

The devastated country looks desolate far and near;

At dusk the west wind soughs and sighs sad and drear.

The sun sets at nightfall;

Dark and cold grows the capital.

(Calling to the maids): Has Lady Yang retired?

Ever Fresh and Mindful Maid (offstage): Yes, she is asleep.

Emperor: Do not wake her. We’ll leave tomorrow at dawn.(Weeping) Ah, Heaven! What misfortune befalls us! What a distress for a flowerlike beauty to sufer a hard journey!

(Singing to the tune of “Southern Epilogue”)

Used to indulgent life in palace deep,

How could she bear the hard journey in mountains steep!

(Weeping) Ah, my darling!

Tender as a flower in May,

How could you sufer the hardship all the way!

Epilogue of the Scene

The setting sun shines on palaces high and low;

The Western pass is lit with beacon fire aglow.

Her song is lost when moaning wind is loud.

Where are the Western mountains veiled by yellow cloud?
