Seeing Off

—By Liang Shiqiu

There is no sorrow like that of parting. Looking back at how refined scholars used to see friends off, I discovered profound revelations.

送行,送别 see off

If you’ve just dropped in to warm up and then go on your way, they will see you off at the gate, saying ‘Please do drop in on us again on your way back.’

In those days, transportation was backward, so once they parted, there was no telling when they would meet again. Consequently, singing a song at Nanpu, plucking a willow twig at Baqiao, and proposing a toast at Yangguan—such farewells are all steeped in meaning.

The visitor, on seeing so many people who hate to see him go, feels delighted, popular, successful, and respectable. One chilly winter night, the train station was not quite bustling with life, for most visitors and well-wishers were huddled for warmth in the waiting hall. However, a dark, dense crowd of seers-off was standing on the endless platform, some wearing cloaks, some wearing cowl-like hats, and some pounding the cement ground with the shoe’s end like beating a drum. I begrudge seeing people off and hate to be seen off myself. However, to those whom I really hate to part from, the moment of their leaving is as excruciating to me as having an operation. As usual, at medical procedures, anesthetic must be used to get patients through the agony in the state of delirium. It would be best if the pain of parting could be similarly avoided.
