Dreams

—By Wu Zuxiang

I have long thought about writing an essay on my dreams. I dream almost every night. Occasionally I have two or three dreams, and sometimes I can hardly remember how many, for they are vague and fragmentary.

Bats have long been known to harbor disease.

🎈 vague adj.

not clear in a person’s mind

to have a vague impression/memory/recollection of sth

例句

They had only a vague idea where the place was.

🎈fragmentary    adj.

made of small parts that are not connected or complete

例句

There is only fragmentary evidence to support this theory.

When the number is so large, the contents cannot be insignificant. Except for a few recurring dreams, most are weird and varied. Yet all my dreams have a common pattern—I show myself to be rather timid and distressed. In short, these dreams are most unpleasant.

🎈 the contents cannot be insignificant双重否定表肯定,相当于the contents can be significant

🎈 recur v.

incur v.

concur v.

在某事上同意某人concur with sb in sth

🎈most unpleasant明显是不是最高级,most意为「非常,极其,完全」,相当于very、extremely、completely。

例句

We shall most probably never meet again.

Whenever I awake and recall the scenes, I cannot but feel astonished. How could I have such a fantastic dream time and again? Secretly, I feel ashamed for doing this, and yet I am annoyed as well.

cannot but do sth、cannot help doing sth、cannot help but do sth

The doctor couldn’t help but retorted, “This is not the North Pole.”

Thanks to their fraternal love, assistance and encouragement, I have time and again been saved from falling into an abyss while on its verge.

Most of my dreams have been forgotten now, but a few have stayed with me. They leave a vague, lingering impression, and they keep occurring almost every night, so I can provide a summary without much thought. My dreams can be classified into the following categories. slow to end or disappear

🎈 lingering adj.

a last lingering look依依不舍的最后一瞥

分为(几类)classify/devide sth into…

The first kind of dream is somewhat thrilling. Such dreams are usually stereotyped—for instance, not knowing where I am, I feel the ground under my feet unexpectedly pulled away and I fall into a dark abyss from a great height. It scares me so much that I shiver all over and immediately wake up.

🎈 stereotyped adj.

A sensation of blissfulness warmed me up all over.

This kind of dream has no so-called beginning and, since I often come to myself in the middle of it, there is no well-defined ending either. With an abrupt jerk of my body, it is all over. These dreams are fairly brief, but quite unusual.

🎈恢复知觉,苏醒 come to

恢复常态 come to oneself [英义to return to your normal state]

One dream, which is still fresh in my mind, should also be placed in this category.

In this dream, I walk alone viewing sights when huge blasts explode overhead. Looking up, I see huge rocks flying all over the sky—some falling from beyond the clouds, others flying great distances across the sky, then disintegrating in deafening explosions.
