Recently, I have been on the move. My travels took me first from my friend’s house to a hotel in Nanjing, then to an apartment in Hangzhou, but in the end I returned to my family residence Yuan Yuan Tang in Shimen. On each occasion, my mind was bombarded with the thoughts now recorded here.

During my stay at my friend’s place in Nanjing, I felt quite comfortable, for we had been friends for years. In childhood, we were inseparable day and night, but as young adults we parted ways to follow our careers.

As well, my friend had lived in circumstances quite similar to mine—some quality tea leaves, a tin of cigarettes, a thermos, some toothpicks, a comfortable rattan chair, and a well-lit window—and because he had all of these amenities, I felt as comfortable there as in my own study.

In English-speaking countries, when people say “Don’t stand on ceremony”, they mean “Make yourself at home.” At my friend’s place, I felt both happy and at home. Still, my friend’s place was not my home. Following a brief talk after dinner, I began to miss my hotel.

Though I did not have to force a smile, I would try to put on a friendly face because it seemed impolite to frown in their presence. Unfortunately, the stoic appearance, which we often take as ferocity, is the most comfortable expression for me.

If the rent was divided up, of course, I could calculate the exact number of cents for each day. However, because the rent was paid over the course of a month, accommodation and payment were disconnected, so I had the impression that I lived there completely free of charge.

Naturally, for these conveniences, I returned to the apartment house from the hotel. Yet the apartment house was not my home after all. Every time I got fed up with the wandering life, I would miss Yuan Yuan Tang back in my hometown.

Returning there from the apartment house put me totally at ease. Still, when lying on the bed in the depths of night pondering over the reflections above, I became disconcerted again. It became obvious that Yuan Yuan Tang was not my true residence, nor was it the destination of my life’s journey. It was not even my real home.
