🎈此句是在描述不受时间限制的科学事实、客观真理，故用一般现在时puts out…。when irradiated by…是when it was irradiated by…的省略形式：when/while引导的从句，若其（逻辑）主语和主句主语相同且含有be动词，则可以省略主语和be。

A small microwave generator at the base of the bulb bombards the inert gas, heating it. The hot gas energizes electrons in the sulfur, which then emit a large amount of visible light.

🎈base和basis的区别：

1、base的基本意思是“底座，基础”,一般指具体有形的事物的底部、基座等；也可用来比喻理论的基础或讨论的根据等。base还可作“基地”解，多指军事或工业基地。base是可数名词，其前可加a或the，在句中可作主语或宾语。

2、basis的基本意思是指人们采取某一行动的“原因；缘由”，也可指人们组织、安排和操作某事的“基准；准则；方式”，作此解时basis是单数名词。basis还可指事物的“主要成分，最重要的部分”，由此事物得以形成、开始和发展，作此解时basis是可数名词，常用于单数形式，有时也用作不可数名词。

🎈“热气体使…（电子）…。电子便……”译“The hot gas …(electrons)…, which …”，中文拆成了两个独立的句子，第二个句子的主语是第一个句子的宾语，英译时很自然地用which引导的非限制性定从译出第二句。

🎈“使…载能”译时没有大费笔墨，而是用energize一词便表示了出来。类似的-ize结尾的词还有很多，如：使……受欢迎popularize。

灯泡本身则由一个马达带动迅速旋转以使其冷却——否则灯泡将会熔化。

The bulb itself is rotated quickly by a motor to cool it—otherwise it would melt.

🎈 The bulb itself…中itself是the bulb的同位语。译“使其冷却”要搞明白“其”指的是“灯泡”。

She added the technology could improve lighting of public spaces while benefiting “the economy and the environment.”

🎈improve可表示“改进、优化”等，如：调整结构improve the structure。

After the new lighting arrays were installed in the Forrestal Building, they reduced energy usage “by more than 60 percent” for that area, Ervin said.
