A Ball to Roll Around》 -英语翻译教程-中英双语赏析

A Ball to Roll Around

🎈roll around在美国口语中有return at a regular or usual time即“周而复始”之意。

I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in Atlantic City and landing on my head.

Now I am thirty-two. I can vaguely remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is.

It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can do strange things to people.
🎈恢复视觉 restore vision/see again。

It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind.
🎈那天/那天早上/那天晚上/那个星期(用于指说话前不久的日子)the other day/morning/evening/week
The other day when I went into Riverside Park, I was greeted by the chirrup of a song thrush from a grove.
🎈if I hadn’t been是一个对过去的虚拟语气(即一种对过去的假设);又,“might +have +done”表示对过去事情的推测,might与may意思相同,但可能性更小,多用于虚拟语气结构中。

I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise.
🎈 otherwise 在这里作副词用,可用 if I hadn’t been blind代替。

I don’t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.
🎈prefer to go/live without my eyes = prefer being blind

Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality.
🎈I believe
🎈补充adjust的一个常用搭配:adjust oneself to the new environment适应新环境

The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes.

The adjustment is never easy.
🎈决非易事is never easy/is always difficult

I was bewildered and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me—a kind of potential to live, you might call it—which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
🎈以斗争方式解决;辩论出结果fight out sth /fight it out
例句
The conflict is still being fought out.

The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic.
🎈看到…was to do结构,我们顺带回顾一下“前有do后省to”
When a British censor put in a red cross at will, all I could do was withdraw the entire manuscript. 注意“all I could do was withdraw”中是withdraw而不是to withdraw。

If I hadn’t been able to do that, I would have collapsed and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life.
🎈a chair rocker = a person sitting on the rocking chair。同理,a dreamer= a person pursuing his/her dream。

When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone.
🎈相信自己belief in myself(名词短语);“支持我独自走下”译作that helps/allows/encourages me down…alone均可。

That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, intricate pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
sweeping, intricate pattern of people指世界上的人形形色色,很复杂。

It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the most elementary things.

Once a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was mocking me and I was hurt.
🎈心里很难受was hurt/was upset/feel sad/…

“I can’t use this,” I said. “Take it with you,” he urged me, “and roll it around.” The words stuck in my head.

“Roll it around!” By rolling the ball I could hear where it went.

This gave me an idea of how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball.
🎈how to achieve a goal (that) I had thought impossible: that在定从中作thought的宾语,可以省略。

At Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it ground ball.
🎈the Blind是the+adj结构,表示一类人或物。

All my life I have set ahead of me a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time.
🎈ahead of me理解为for me/for my future即可。

I had to learn my limitations. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure.
It was no good to=It was not any/much good
例句
This gadget isn’t much good.
🎈wildly out of reach中wildly是副词,表程度,指“非常、极其”;out of reach则指“无法到达、无法达成、能力范围之外”。

I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.
🎈平均而言;一般说来on the average
例句
On average, the virus kills about half of those who get it.
