The Photographic Record of My Childhood ——He Wei

The Photographic Record of My Childhood,比Photos Taken in My Childhood和What I Photographed Like as a Child确切。

The other day, in rummaging a suitcase for newspaper clippings of my essays written over forty years ago, I came upon some old objects, among them an enormously bulky old album.
🎈「前些日子」意即「不久前」,可译为The other day或Recently。
came upon an irresistible item at a yard sale.
A sense of impending doom came upon all of us.
among them an enormously bulky old album→ an enormously bulky old album was among them。同including an enormously bulky old album。

The moth-eaten album contained several photos of myself taken in early childhood.
例如state-owned/backed(国有的)
🎈taken in early childhood作photos的后置定语。

I stared blankly at my little face in the faded photos, feeling as if I were reliving my childhood.
I stared at it blankly, …
I stared at it blankly (或vacantly)
I looked blankly…
🎈「似乎找到了童年的梦」意即「似乎重温童年旧梦」,故译feeling as if I were reliving my childhood。

But I also felt that my childhood had long been irretrievably gone and no longer belonged to me.
后者其实可以译出来,比如按理解可译成had long been irretrievably gone and become just/mere memories。

My childhood, as recorded in the old photos, was at once real and unreal.
🎈as recorded in the old photos:as引导非限定性定语从句时可放在主句之前,也可位于主句之后,当然也可放在句中。
A. Thanksgiving day has been a international festival, as we know.
B. As is a successful man, he makes a brilliant speech.
🎈was at once real and unreal意同both real and illusory。

In one of the photos, I was very little, probably just one year old.

As was the custom of my native place, I had a big ornament hung on my chest as a lucky charm.
🎈「在胸前悬垂着一块很大的‘锁片’」可按「胸前挂着一个大型饰物,以表吉祥」译为a big ornament hung on my chest as a lucky charm或a big piece of jewelry hung on my chest as an amulet to protect me against bad luck。

The photo had been taken over half a century ago.
🎈半个多世纪前over half a century ago

Was it I myself in the embryonic stage of life, with my ignorant eyes on the strange world?
正常问句是Was it me?

Another photo, in which I stood full-length, had been taken, I remember, when I was three or four.
🎈in which I stood full-length是非限制性定语从句,I remember是插入语,when引导时间状语从句。

It was winter, and I was dressed cumbersomely in a cotton-padded thick gown, staggering ridiculously.

In still another photo, probably taken at the same time, I was holding grandma by the hand.
🎈 In still another photo :still
🎈拉着手、牵着手hold/take sb by the hand

As she had been looking after me ever since I was in the cradle, we had become inseparable from each other.
🎈ever since I was in the cradle意同ever since I was a little baby或 ever since my babyhood。

In the photo, she looked in her early fifties.
🎈 in her early fifties在其五十多岁的时候

She was turning her head slightly, as if trying to make me look ahead or telling me the tragic and moving story of Meng Jiang Nu making a long, difficult journey in search of her husband.
🎈as if trying to make me look ahead or telling me…:将as if to do, as if doing看作状语从句省略了与主句相同的主语和be,更能看出从句中的虚拟语气。
例句
He opened his mouth as if (he were) to say something. were to do表示将来。
He stood there as if (he were) waiting for someone. were doing
🎈Meng Jiang Nu — The name of a heroine in Chinese folklore, who trekked over a long way to look for her husband only to find him already dead from forced labor on the construction site of the Great Wall. Her bitter cries over her husband’s death was said to have caused a section of the Wall to crumble down.

She had an unlimited stock of folk tales to tell.

I always thought her in possession of a wordless book full of fascinating stories.
🎈thought her in possession of: her是宾语,in possession of理解成宾补。full of fascinating stories是book的后置定语。

They became, as it were, the first literary works that I ever came into contact with in my life.
They became, as it were, the first literary works I ever came into contact with in my life,其中as it were是成语,作「可以说」「似乎」等解,为译文中的添加词,原文虽无其词而有其意。

The background of the photos was yellowed with age and dotted with fuzzy specks.

There was distinctly a big round hole in the mottled wall.

Wasn’t the round hole a fan-shaped gate? I asked myself. Yes, it was.

It was the moon gate so familiar to me in my childhood — a fairy-tale gate!

I used to play on the flagstones of the courtyard in front of the hall of the old house where I had been born.
🎈过去常常…… used to do
习惯于…… be used to doing
被用来、将用于 be used to do

Standing side by side before the tiled wall were several water vats for receiving rain water dripping from the eaves.
🎈Standing side by side before the tiled wall were:倒装结构。
面向着积水滩,背后是城墙……while facing me lies Ji Shui Tan Pond and right behind me rises the high city wall同理。

In playing hide-and-seek with my little playmates, I would conceal myself behind one of the vats, which were taller than I was.
🎈 捉迷藏play hide-and-seek
玩跷跷板play on the see-saw

On either side of the courtyard there was a moon gate.
🎈两边on either side of/on both sides of…

Why did the two big moon gates always remain in my memory?
🎈记得:remain in my memory,remain换成exist也行。
处于并仍处于社会主义初级阶段remain in the primary stage of socialism

Was it because they differed from ordinary rectangular gates in resembling the big round gate of the legendary palace on the moon?
🎈differed from同were different from
五边形的pentagonal(五角大楼The Pentagon)

Or was it because of the little world between the two big gates where I used to play happily?

I often think of the old house in my hometown. It brings back many, many memories of my childhood.
此处也可译为puts me in mind of my childhood。

In the midsummer of 1960, I returned to my old home in the city of Dinghai for a short visit after a long absence of more than thirty years.
🎈「阔别三十多年的故乡」译作after a long absence of more than thirty years, absence(缺席)用的很妙,值得积累。

One day, in the deepening twilight, I quietly stepped into Heng Tang Alley, a long flagstone alley between two towering walls.

The setting sun was casting its last rays on an old house down the alley.
🎈down the alley中down是介词,表示「沿,循,顺」
例句
They set off at a jog up one street and down another…

At the direction of someone, I found my way to the house and ascended its stone steps. Its gate was left unlatched, so I pushed it open.
At the direction of someone, I found my way to the house, ascended its stone steps, and pushed the unlatched door open。

Inside it was all quiet.
Inside the passport was a folded slip of paper…
🎈all quiet:all用作副词的三种用法
I’m all for your plan.
She lives all by herself.
The coffee went all over my trousers.
I’m all for pubs being open all day.
He was all excited.
Now don’t get all upset about it.
If that is the case, all the better.
I feel all the better for that swim.

My eyes suddenly fell on the moon gate on either side of the courtyard.
🎈目光落在…eyes fall on
fall on/upon sb/sth指「袭击,向 …
They fell on him with sticks.
The full cost of the wedding fell on us.

Yes, the same two old big round holes. Only they looked much smaller than they were in my memory, and very shabby too.
🎈much smaller:much可修饰比较级,表示「…

The courtyard and the hall where I had used to play around with my little playmates in my childhood were now heaped with sacks of goods.
🎈「堆满了层叠的货包」译作were now heaped with sacks of goods。
Now, the house is a heap of rubble
a neat stack of dishes
a neat pile of clothes

So my old house had long been transformed into the warehouse of a department store!
🎈had long been :long是副词,意为「长久地、长期地」,其位置在助动词、情态动词后,行为动词或主要动词之前。

I hesitated to move ahead, feeling perplexed and melancholy.
🎈feeling perplexed and melancholy作伴随状语。

Perhaps I should not have returned to my hometown to see my old house and to relive my past experience.

I wondered whether it had been worthwhile or not for me to revisit my old home.
I wondered whether my visit had ended up in gains or losses,现按「我不知道此行是否值得」之意译为I wondered whether it had been worthwhile or not for me to revisit my old house。

Everything’s gone. Everything’s changed.
Everything’s…

The only thing that still remained was my photographic childhood.
🎈「照片上的童年」译作my photographic childhood,也可译作my childhood recorded in the old photos.

Having found some newspaper clippings of my old writings, I replaced in the suitcase the album that had seen many more winters than I.
🎈那一本比我生活过的年代更长久的影集译the album that had seen many more winters than I,其winters作年代、岁月解。

Then I carefully put back the lid on the suitcase.

Memories of my childhood, together with the album, sank again to the bottom of the suitcase.
