Rush –Zhu ziqing

1:If swallows go away, they will come back again. If willows wither, they will turn green again. If peaches shed their blossoms, they will flower again.

译文2:Swallows may have gone, but there is a time of return; willow trees may have died back, but there is a time of regreening; peach blossoms may have fallen, but they will bloom again.

If Winter comes, can Spring be far away,有助于烘托原文的韵味。

1:But, tell me, you the wise, why should our days go by never to return?

译文2:Now, you the wise, tell me, why should our days leave us, never to return?

🎈the wise是you的同位语。

Why(or How) + should结构表示说话人对某事不能理解,感到意外、惊异等意思。

Why should you be so late today?

🎈一去不复返never to return

Youth will soon be gone never to return.

1:—Perhaps they have been stolen by someone. But who could it be and where could he hide them?

译文2:—If they had been stolen by someone, who could it be? Where could he hide them?

🎈who could it be:it可指代性别不明的人。

where could he hide them:he是单数型代词,书面英语中泛指(人)他,她有些人不喜欢这种用法,更倾向于使用 he or she 或 they。

例句

The teacher should encourage the child to proceed as far as he can, and when he is stuck, ask for help.

1:Perhaps they have just run away by themselves. But where could they be at the present moment?

译文2:If they had made the escape themselves, then where could they stay at the moment?

But where could they be at the present moment,其中at the present moment等于now,也可用at the moment或at the moment in time等表达。

1:I don’t know how many days I am entitled to altogether, but my quota of them is undoubtedly wearing away.

译文2:I do not know how many days I have been given to spend, but I do feel my hands are getting empty.

I don’t know how many days I am entitled to altogether,其中entitled to相当于qualified for,作“能有……” I don’t know how many days been given to live。

现以意译法处理为my quota of them is undoubtedly wearing away。 也可用my allotted span代替my quota of them。

在默默里算着,八千多日子已经从我手中溜去;

译文1:Counting up silently, I find that more than 8000 days have already slipped away through my fingers.

译文2:Taking stock silently, I find that more than eight thousand days have already slid away from me.

🎈“八千多日子已经从我手中溜去”译为more than 8000 days have already slipped away through my fingers,其中to slip away through one’s fingers是英语习语,正好为中文表达“从某人手中溜去”的counterpart

1:Like a drop of water falling off a needle point into the ocean, my days are quietly dripping into the stream of time without leaving a trace.

译文2:Like a drop of water from the point of a needle disappearing into the ocean, my days are dripping into the stream of time, soundless, traceless.

1:At the thought of this, sweat oozes from my forehead and tears trickle down my cheeks.

译文2:Already sweat is starting on my forehead, and tears welling up in my eyes.

At the thought of this(一想到这儿),承上启下,原文虽无其字而有其意。

1:What is gone is gone, what is to come keeps coming. How swift is the transition in between!

译文2:Those that have gone have gone for good, those to come keep coming; yet in between, how swift is the shift, in such a rush?

1:When I get up in the morning, the slanting sun casts two or three squarish patches of light into my small room.

译文2:When I get up in the morning, the slanting sun marks its presence in my small room in two or three oblongs.

🎈 “两三方”译为two and three squarish patches,其中squarish的意思是“似方形的”比square模糊些,似较可取。

1:The sun has feet too, edging away softly and stealthily. And, without knowing it, I am already caught in its revolution.

译文2:The sun has feet, look, he is treading on, lightly and furtively; and I am caught, blankly, in his revolution.

🎈“也茫茫然跟着旋转”未用too、also等词译出,而是译作am already caught in its revolution。

1:Thus the day flows away through the sink when I wash my hands; vanishes in the rice bowl when I have my meal; passes away quietly before the fixed gaze of my eyes when I am lost in reverie.

译文2:Thus—the day flows away through the sink when I wash my hands, wears off in the bowl when I eat my meal, and passes away before my day-dreaming gaze as I reflect in silence.

译为to reach out for…;“从……(手边)过去”译为to brush past…;“从……(身上)跨过”译为to stride over…;“从……(脚边)飞去了”译为to flit past…;“闪过去了”译为to flash past。

1:Aware of its fleeting presence, I reach out for it only to find it brushing past my outstretched hands. In the evening, when I lie on my bed, it nimbly strides over my body and flits past my feet.

译文2:I can feel his haste now, so I reach out my hands to hold him back, but he keeps flowing past my withholding hands. In the evening, as I lie in bed, he strides over my body, glides past my feet, in his agile way.

🎈句中,aware of sth在句子中充当状语,也表伴随,主语是“我”,后面only to find it doing表示结果状语。In the evening,when I lie on the bed都是时间状语,后面的主语又换成了“时间”。

1:By the time when I open my eyes to meet the sun again, another day is already gone.

译文2:The moment I open my eyes and meet the sun again, one whole day has gone.

1:I heave a sigh, my head buried in my hands.

译文2:I bury my face in my hands and heave a sigh.

🎈my head buried in my hands为独立主格结构。

1:But, in the midst of my sighs, a new day is flashing past.

译文2:But the new day begins to flash past in the sigh.

之中in the midst of

1:Living in this world with its fleeting days and teeming millions, what can I do but waver and wander and live a transient life? What have I been doing during the 8000 fleeting days except wavering and wandering?

译文2:What can I do, in this bustling world, with my days flying in their escape? Nothing but to hesitate, to rush. What have I been doing in that eight-thousand-day rush, apart from hesitating?

过去的日子如轻烟,被微风吹散了,如薄雾,被初阳蒸融了;

译文1:The bygone days, like wisps of smoke, have been dispersed by gentle winds, and, like thin mists, have been evaporated by the rising sun.

译文2:Those bygone days have been dispersed as smoke by a light wind, or evaporated as mist by the morning sun.

1:What traces have I left behind? No, nothing, not even gossamer-like traces.

译文2:What traces have I left behind me? Have I ever left behind any gossamer traces at all?

1:I have come to this world stark naked, and in the twinkling of an eye, I am to go back as stark naked as ever.

译文2:I have come to this world, stark naked; am I to go back, in a blink, in the same stark nakedness?

🎈转眼间、一瞬间、眨眼间in the twinkling of an eye

🎈am to go back:be to do可表示“注定、不可避免、必然会发生。

1:However, I am taking it very much to heart: why should I be made to pass through this world for nothing at all?

译文2:It is not fair though: why should I have made such a trip for nothing!

Don’t take… to heart.

🎈在世上白白走一遭pass through this world for nothing at all

1:O you the wise, would you tell me please: why should our days go by never to return?

译文2:You the wise, tell me, why should our days leave us, never to return?

🎈would you比could you更委婉。
