A Rickshaw Boy
巴金
Ba Jin
These few days I have been staying in the home of my friend Fang.
🎈「这些时候」译为These few days,也可译为These days、Recently,或During the last few days。
I have been staying in the home of my friend Fang,也可译为I have been putting up with a friend of mine Fang,其中习语To put up作「住宿」解。

One day, it had rained until we finished supper.
🎈此句意即「吃完晚饭后,雨已经停了」,故译为it had rained until we finished supper。

The sky was gradually clearing up, and the evening air was nice and cool.
The sky was gradually clearing up。

Fang suggested that we go to the park.
🎈Suggest表建议之意时,后面为should do,should可以省略。

“Rickshaw, rickshaw!” we called out from a street corner. “To the back gate of the park!”
🎈「我们站在街口高声叫道」译为we called out from a street corner,其中from表示喊者所在地方。用了from就可不拘泥于原文的「站在」,比we called out standing at a street corner简练。

Soon we found ourselves surrounded by a group of rickshaw men with their vehicles.
🎈「一群车夫拖着车子跑过来」译为a group of rickshaw men with their vehicles,此处「拖着车子」变为介词短语with their vehicles,「跑过来」则没有译出,是因为已经包含在句意之中了。

No sooner had we each quickly got on a rickshaw than the rickshaw pullers started to run.
No sooner A than B一词组,此处要注意事态的使用,A事件发生在B事件之前,并且该
No sooner had the game started than it began to rain heavily.

Seating myself leisurely, I was surprised when my eye fell on the swaying thin back of the rickshaw puller.
🎈「用安闲的眼光看车夫」意即「看着车夫的背」,原文的「安闲」其实也表明安闲地坐着,故放在句首,用非谓语动词形式Seating myself leisurely表伴随状态,「用安闲的眼光看车夫」译为my eye fell on the swaying thin back of the rickshaw puller,使用了无灵主语my eyes。此处the swaying thin back of还对车夫的背进行了补充描写,更能显出我的吃惊。

Oh my, it’s a small kid! He must be no more than fourteen.

“Kid, how old are you?” I asked.

“Fifteen!” he answered with so much self-assurance and pride as if he had already come of age at fifteen.
🎈「他很勇敢、很骄傲地回答」译为he answered with so much self-assurance and pride,其中用self-assurance表达「勇敢」,因「勇敢」在此的内涵是「自信」「自恃」
🎈come of age 达到法定年龄

He took hold of the shafts and started running ahead — the very picture of unflagging energy.
🎈「他全身都是劲」译为the very picture of unflagging energy,其中the picture of是习语,作「体现」解。

“How long have you been in this trade?” I continued.
How long have you been in this trade。

“More than six months,” said he with no less pride.
🎈「小孩依旧骄傲地回答」译为said he with no less pride,no less意即仍然,例句:His attachment to alchemy was no less ardent.
no more  不再
例句
No more snacks before dinner.
no less than 至少
例句
On Friday, no less than twelve letters arrived for Harry.
no more than 只是,仅仅
例句
The calf is no more than a few weeks old.

“How much do you earn a day?”

“After paying the rent for hiring the rickshaw, I still have 20 strings of cash left!”
20 strings of cash

I understood it was equivalent to 40 cents.

“20 strings of cash!” the middle-aged man pulling Fang’s rickshaw chimed in admiringly. “No easy job for a small kid to earn that much.”
🎈pulling Fang’s rickshaw为后置定语,修饰the middle-aged man。
🎈chime in (with sth)
to join or interrupt a conversation
例句
He kept chiming in with his own opinions.

“20 strings of cash!” Fang put in, showing interest in what the small kid had said. “Is it enough for your family to live on? How big is your family?”
If you put in a remark, you interrupt someone or add to what they have said with the remark.”
例句
‘He was a lawyer before that,’ Mary Ann put in…
🎈live on 意即靠…过活
例句
You can totally, totally live on this.
How big is your family,地道简洁。

The small kid kept quiet as if he had not heard Fang’s question.
🎈「仿佛没有听见方的话似的」译为as if he had not heard Fang’s question,使用了虚拟语气。

Why didn’t he answer? I guessed there must be something behind it. Maybe he didn’t like to be asked about it at all. Maybe he had no father, nor even mother.
I guessed there must be something behind it,比I guessed there must be a reason for it地道。
Maybe he didn’t like to be asked about it at all。

“Do you have a father?” Fang, nevertheless, kept on questioning.

“No!” The reply was unhesitating.

“A Mother?”

“No!” The answer was as laconic as firm, apparently in a different tone.
His answer was short and sounded firm,但不如The answer was as laconic as firm地道。

There was a note of pain in his voice.
There was a note of pain in his voice。

I thought he might not have told the truth.
表示推测的情态动词有must, can, could, may, might等,且语气由左向右依次减弱。could, might并不一定是can, may的过去式,有时只是语气分别比can, may更弱。

“I have a younger sister,” said he without being asked, as if impatient of his own reticence. “He sold her.”
🎈「他好像实在忍不住了」可按「他好像对自己的缄默感到不耐烦」之意译为as if impatient of his own reticence。

I immediately understood who was meant by “he”.
🎈「‘他’字指的是什么人」意即「‘他’意味着谁」,故译为who was meant by ‘he’。

I realized this boy must have been suffering great misery in his life.
I realized this boy must have been suffering great misery in his life。

“Where’s your father now?” I demanded.
Where’s your father now。

He went on without answering my question, “He took drugs, he deserted my mother, he sold my sister, he ran away.”
She was deserted by her husband.
The villages had been deserted

The four short sentences spoke volumes for the family tragedy.
🎈spoke volumes for是习语,作「充分说明」to speak very clearly解。

What bitter experiences he must have gone through since early childhood!

“What a heartless father!” sighed the middle-aged rickshaw man.

“Where do you live now?” He kept up the conversation with the little boy while running along with the rickshaw.
🎈一面拉车 while running along with the rickshaw

“You’d better slacken your pace a little bit to conserve your energy,” he said. “The gentlemen won’t care.”
🎈「慢慢儿拉」即「放慢步子」,故译为slacken your pace a little bit。
The gentlemen won’t care

“I live in chechang. For that I have to pay a rent of 100 coppers daily. I put away what’s left to buy… clothes.”
🎈chechang is the place where the rickshaw renters kept their vehicles for hire.
For that I have to pay a rent of 100 coppers daily。
🎈put away意即「把…收好」
例句
Her bed was crisply made, her clothes put away.

As 100 coppers was equal to 20 cents, he could save up 20 cents a day.
🎈此处「是」译为was equal to

“The child is a real marvel,” the middle-aged rickshaw man said to us with a note of admiration. “He knows how to save up money for clothes.”
The child is a real marvel。
🎈此处a note of意即「…

Then he again asked the child, “Did your father ever come to see you?”
🎈看过你 come to see you

“No, he dared not!” The brief answer, uttered in an uncompromising tone, showed great grievance against his father. Words failed us.
🎈「坚决地回答」译为uttered in an uncompromising tone,uncompromising意即不妥协的。
Words failed us.

His answer had taken me by surprise.

What could I say as regards his misfortune?
What could I say as regards his misfortune?。

The middle-aged rickshaw man, however, reacted otherwise.

“Listen to me, kid. You’re now doing quite well. After all, he’s your father.
You’re now doing quite well,do well可意为做的好,进展很好。
After all, he’s your father。

You should give him some money when he comes to see you.”
🎈拿点钱给他用 give him some money

“No, I won’t!” the boy answered unhesitatingly in a forceful tone. “I’ll beat him up when I meet him.”
🎈语气非常强硬 in a forceful tone
I was surprised that the hatred he harbored against his father should be so deep-seated.
🎈he harbored against his father为定语从句,修饰the hatred。

His tone, his attitude, his hatred… seemed to have affected me deeply. I too began to hate his father.
🎈「仿佛传染到我的心上来了」即「似乎影响了我」,故译为seemed to have affected me deeply。

The middle-aged rickshaw man, having met with rebuff, fell into silence.

However, judging from what he had said, he was evidently living in a world of his own — bereft of home, love or warmth, and flogged by the scourge of life.
🎈「我知道对于他另外有一个世界存在」意即「他生活在他自己的世界里」,故译he was evidently living in a world of his own。
🎈「只有一根生活的鞭子在赶他」可直译为ordered about by the whip of life,但不如flogged by the scourge of life富于表现力。

But he acted unyieldingly and was filled with bitter hatred. He was using both hands to bear the burden of life. He was never scared or discouraged.
But he acted unyieldingly and was filled with bitter hatred。

He could achieve what children from well-to-do families could never do, and he had ideas that they didn’t dare to have.
🎈what children from well-to-do families could never do为宾语从句,因为achieve后面缺乏宾语,从句do后也缺乏宾语,所以用what。
🎈that they didn’t dare to have为定语从句,修饰ideas。

Life is a melting pot which hardens the will of children like him so that they are able to withstand the bitterest blows of life ever.

As I eyed the boy by lamplight, I unexpectedly saw a very ordinary round face with plain features.
As I eyed the boy by lamplight。

I was, however, surprised when I met his eyes — eyes which looked down upon everything of this world and showed no indication of regard for authority.
🎈「在那一对眼睛里,我找不到承认任何权威的表示」译为eyes …. which showed no indication of regard for authority,注意其中用indication(迹象)代替expression,用regard(尊重)代替recognition。

I had never seen eyes showing so much pride, indomitability and resoluteness.
