参差荇菜，

是君子追求的对象。

追求不到那姑娘，

却是醒也思梦也想。

想念她啊想念她，

翻来覆去到天亮。

弹琴鼓瑟把她爱。

[1] 关关：雌雄两鸟的和鸣声。

[2] 雎鸠：一种水鸟，相传这种鸟雌雄间的爱情很专一。

[3] 流：顺着水流之势而择取。

[4] 芼：采摘。

Cooing and Wooing[1]

By riverside a pair

Of turtledoves are cooing;

There is a maiden fair

whom a young man is wooing.

Water flows left and right

Of cresses here and there;

The youth yearns day and night

For the maiden so fair.

His yearning grows so strong,

He cannot fall asleep,

But tosses all night long,

So deep in love, so deep!

Now gather left and right

Cress long or short and tender!

O lute, play music light

For the fiancée so slender!

Feast friends at left and right

On cresses cooked tender!

O bells and drums, delight

The bride so sweet and slender!

[1]The young man made acquaintance with the maiden in spring when turtledoves were coo ing (Stanza 1), wooed her in summer when cress floated on water (Stanza 2) and yearned for her until they were engaged in autumn when cress was gathered (Stanza 4) and married in winter when cresses were cooked (Stanza 5).
