四十年来家国，

三千里地山河。

凤阁龙楼连霄汉，

玉树琼枝作烟萝。

几曾识干戈？

一旦归为臣虏，

沈腰[1]潘鬓[2]消磨。

最是仓皇辞庙[3]日，

教坊[4]犹奏别离歌，

垂泪对宫娥。

[1]沈腰：细腰，这里指腰围减小。

[2]潘鬓：指中年鬓发早白。

[3]庙：古代帝王、诸侯或者大夫祭祀祖宗的场所，宗庙。

[4]教坊：古代官署名称，主管宫乐。

Li Yu

A reign of forty years

O’er a land of three thousand li,

My royal palaces touching the celestial spheres,

My shady forest looking like a hazy sea.

What did I know of shields and spears?

A captive now, I’m worn away,

Thinner I grow, my hair turns gray.

O how could I forget the hurried parting day

When by the band the farewell songs were played

And I shed tears before my palace maid!

Li Yu (937—978) was the last ruler of the Later Tang Dynasty. In 975, his capital fell and he himself was taken captive. In his captivity he wrote many of his best lyrics which represent the highest achievement of the lyric poets of that period. In this lyric we find a sharp contrast between the past in the first stanza and the present in the second.
