Each day, I lingered as long as possible in my bed—for this was my sanctuary—and I would watch the sunlight play on the quilt while secretly I ridiculed others’ pointless rush through their day and recalled my dreams from the night before, an even greater pleasure than having the dreams in the first place. When I was at university, a few self-righteous professors viewed students who were late for class with scorn. Real friendship is easily formed in primary or middle school days when, being socially inexperienced and free from the burden of life, you give little thought to personal gains or losses, and make friends entirely as a result of similar tastes and interests or <congenial> disposition.

While relaxing peacefully on bed, I often remembered Robert Browning’s poem: “God’s in His Heaven; All’s right with the world.”(Fishes swim in the water, birds perch on the trees, and I lie on my bed.)

Life is short, yet if we have a glorious youth, then our life cannot be said to have been wasted. So, in our later years we can park ourselves by the fireside to bask in our personal Indian summer, recalling past glories.

She parked herself on the edge of the bed.

Indian summer

英义

a period of dry warm weather in the autumn/fall

I had to take my holiday late but fortunately we had an Indian summer and the weather was splendid.

Similarly, days are short, but if we can have a glorious morning, the day cannot be said to have been wasted. In our afternoons and evenings, we can recall the joys of the early morning.

🎈 recall the joys of the early morning也可改写为call up the joys of the early morning。recall 和call sth up均指“回忆某事(to bring something back to your mind)”

If our youth can be the manifestation of our joy, our remaining years cannot be dreary; youthful happiness often leaves behind a shadow, one that seems to possess the magical power to make our dismal old age sparkle with kindness and joviality.

🎈魔力magical power

🎈dismal adj.

causing or showing sadness

dismal conditions/surroundings/weather

The same is true of a day. As the Chinese saying goes, a good beginning is half of success. So, an enjoyable morning is often the herald of a cheerful day.

The same is true…

A good beginning is half of success.

🎈 herald

2)n. 预兆

是……的预兆 herald sth或be the herald of sth

To me, sleeping late is not only the beginning of a happy day but also the ending of a delightful night and as I go to bed in the night, I am already beginning to anticipate the joy of sleeping late the next morning. Since anticipation is often sweeter than reality, I am surrounded by this happy, lively atmosphere all day long. Who could have thought that this joyful, peaceful vision is simply the result of sleeping late?

As well, sleeping late can dispel our suffocating depression.

🎈sleeping late表示「睡过头,迟起,睡懒觉」,而「睡得晚」的准确说法应该是 go to sleep/bed late

Monotony of life seems to be the supreme affliction faced by men. Tragedy can be interesting and boisterous; the mechanical life is boring and monotonous.

Nothing short of sleeping late can be the remedy for this. So, if you feel utterly bored, you should sleep for an extra half hour or even a solid hour before rising. Of course, when you get up, you may not find sufficient time to do all you should. So, you must simply keep busy at them, for this is the golden key to the palace of happiness.

🎈 solid adj. 不停息的,不间断的without a pause; continuous

例句

The essay represents a solid week’s work.

Often I would not get up until five minutes before the start of work. So I had to wash my face, brush my teeth, and eat my breakfast at a fantastic speed. Just imagine how romantic all these acts were! When toothpaste splashed about and water sprayed all over and, standing in front of the mirror, I combed my hair while eating my bread, who could say that my life was not interesting?

As well, I was afraid of being late, so this too put me in an adventurous mood.

These minor adventures which I secretly knew would not result in any inconvenience and the excitement they caused were most adorable, particularly for cowards like us who never had the heart to run any risk in the real sense.

🎈These minor adventures which I secretly knew would not result in any inconvenience and the excitement they caused were most adorable中which (I secretly knew) would not result in any inconvenience and the excitement they caused是修饰adventures的定语从句,其中they caused又相当于(that) they caused,修饰inconvenience and the excitement。

I loved braving the raging wind from the North because when marching against the yellow sand that stung our faces, we felt like warriors making a charge on the battlefield, determined to vanquish our enemies. Wrestling with the fury of the elements was a real heroic deed and, except for the sand that got into our nostrils and eyes, we were exposed to no danger, regardless of how hard we tried to pretend the opposite.

Even during my holidays, I would not get up until half past ten and, after breakfast and a smoke, the clock had already struck eleven. When realizing that I had not accomplished a single thing, I hurriedly set to my tasks. Can there be anything more interesting than making much ado about nothing?

By its very nature, sleeping late implies indolence, but it can also furnish us with a lively atmosphere and bring color and enchantment into our lives. The laziest people in the world are those who rise at dawn to get everything done and then sit yawning as if in a trance the rest of the day.

Where else but in Art can we find the comforts of sleeping late? Many have not realized its virtues, and this is further evidence that sleeping late is an Art, because Art alone can be ignored like this.

Now spring is in the air. The night is bitterly short and the sun rises much too early. When we wake up at five or six, the sun is already in view.

The essay Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, written by the contemporary British essayist Jerome K. Jerome, rambled wildly about the trifles of life, but in a humorous style. It seems that the author was more sensitive and thoughtful about life than other writers. This is probably because I am a lazy bone as well. If I am accused of defending him like a bureaucrat shielding his fellow officer, I don’t mind. Let’s let it go at that.

🎈contemporary n.

🎈存在 be around

🎈费心做某事bother to do sth

… So you needn’t bother to reason with him.

The addition of “One” to “Idle Thoughts of an Idle Man” in the subtitle apparently shows that whenever I’m bored I will continue to write essays of this sort, but who knows when I will write my second? Even God dare not predict it. Sometimes at night I work out in my mind a draft for an essay, but then clean forget all the mental notes because I get up too early—that is exasperation!
