The Serving of Food

By Wang Liaoyi

In China, one thing stands out to illustrate the team spirit of its people— eating! Ten or twenty people can share a plate of food or a bowl of soup. At banquets, tablemates take pains to lift their chopsticks at the same time and put the food into their mouths simultaneously. Regrettably, they cannot chew together at the same pace.

Many people were involved in this conspiracy, but three stand out.

take pains to do sth / go to great pains to do sth

例句

I had taken great pains with my appearance.

There is a joke, still current, that tells of a foreigner who spoke of a Chinese banquet.

“Twenty-four Chinese people were said to eat at a banquet table. Is that true?”

The Chinese replied, “Yes.”

The foreigner then asked, “The dishes were so far away. How could they reach the food with their chopsticks?”

The Chinese replied, “Their chopsticks were one meter long.”

The foreigner continued to ask, “With the help of the long chopsticks they could reach the food, but how could they bend the wrists and then put food into their mouths?”

The Chinese answered, “They helped each other, one taking food and putting it into another’s mouth.”

🎈这是笑话讲的是…… a joke that tells of sth

例句

Republican pamphlets told of the progress made during the past four years.

Chinese dining customs demonstrate both the team spirit and the principle of economy.

🎈表示 illustrate/demonstrate/suggest/signify/show/indicate/display/…

In the West, each has a plate of food, and the leftovers, if any, often go to waste. In China, ten people can share a plate of food, and since one’s poison is another’s pleasure, each person can take what he loves and leave the rest for his tablemates.

剩下,残留 be left ove

例句

There was lots of food left over.

One’s poison is another’s pleasure.

Usually, there is no food left over, but should there be any, it will be less than at a Western banquet, even if the amount provided was the same.

🎈should there be any相当于if there should be any。

在虚拟条件句中,如果从句中含有were/had/should等词时,可将if省去,把were/had/should提到主语之前,引起倒装;若句中无were/had/should等词,则不能省略if,也不能用倒装结构。

Thanks to these qualities, we Chinese should be proud of our sages for creating proper etiquette at meals.

骄傲 be proud of/take pride in

🎈sage n.

a person who is regarded as being very wise

the formal rules of correct or polite behaviour in society or among members of a particular profession

medical/legal/professional etiquette医学界的/法律界的/行业规矩

Still, our forefathers believed that the etiquette left much to be desired. To them, any diners who did not defer to others were little better than animals at a trough, and so they advocated the offering and declining of food at dinner table.

🎈遵从,听从,顺从 defer to sb/sth

例句

They were willing to defer to my needs.

🎈同 …(几乎)一样,和 …(几乎)一样坏little/no better than

The elephant’s night vision is little better than our own.

🎈trough n.

a long narrow open container for animals to eat or drink from

In the past, guests had waited passively for others to take food, that is, let others eat more of the choice items; in time, diners became more active and began to place food onto others’ plates, into their bowls, and even into their mouths.

🎈choice adj.

Mason’s choicest chocolates

As a matter of fact, this change to activism was the result of the earlier passive waiting. At this time, when the most desirable dishes were served, a diner would let them pass or eat just a little and allow his co-diners to take more. He would also have to judge the desires of other diners against his own generosity, knowing his tablemates would do the same.

🎈desirable adj.

something that is worth having or doing because it is useful, necessary, or popular

例句

The crowd moved indoors for what were deemed the most desirable items.

The resulting stalemate naturally caused a contest among the guests, with each competing to offer and decline the best of the meal. Thus, each banquet saw the offering and declining of food as an indispensable display of good manners.

🎈stalemate n.

a disagreement or a situation in a competition in which neither side is able to win or make any progress

The less forceful host may simply place food onto a guest’s plate, while a more aggressive hostess may insist on placing the food into his bowl. As a rule, the host offers food to the guest, and strangely enough, soon after the self-styled close relatives and friends of the host will do the same.

🎈self-styled adj.

On occasion, a choice slice of meat, after having been passed around on ten more pairs of chopsticks (it has, so to speak, toured various countries), will finally return to the instigator.

🎈slice n.

a slice of bread一片面包

a slice of meat一片肉

slice the steak into long thin slices将牛排切成长长的薄片

Suppose you are the host’s newly-wed son-in-law, and then everything will be different.

Throughout the dinner you will find yourself the target of a thousand arrows, with everyone at the table doing their part to place “delicious” foods into your bowl. Your bowl may find itself heaped so high that your nose can touch the abalone, your eyes touch the cubed chicken, your mouth is smeared with gravy, and of course eating any rice is out of the question.

🎈众矢之的the target of a thousand arrows

🎈尽自己的职责 do one’s part

🎈不可能,不允许 out of the question

I often wonder why the host and hostess do not create a bowl of assorted food especially for the honored guest to save his tablemates from this spectacle.

上座 the seat of honour

上坐 take the seat of honour

中解救出来 save sb from sth

免于(灾难等)…… be safe from…

He was dying, and must be saved from hell.

Offering food is admittedly a great virtue, but the problem is whether all at the table have the same preferences.

🎈preference n.

a greater interest in or desire for sb/sth than sb/sth else

a preference for sb/sth 对……

例句

It’s a matter of personal preference.

Mencius once said, “All the mouths have the same taste of food,” but I think there is something missing from this sentence, at least a proviso should be added.

🎈proviso n.

a condition that must be accepted before an agreement can be made

例句

He agreed to their visit with the proviso that they should stay no longer than one week.

To me, the French proverb seems more proper: liDes gouts et des couleurst on ne dispute pas.” In other words, the taste of food and the color of clothes differ from person to person, and there is no fixed standard for them.

What the host considers “good” is not necessarily what the guest likes to eat. The ingredients in dishes and the methods in their cooking often mean a world of difference to individuals, especially to those from far-away places.

🎈ingredient n.

one of the things from which sth is made, especially one of the foods that are used together to make a particular dish

例句

Our skin cream contains only natural ingredients.

From time to time, a host may press his guest to accept a food that does not agree with him, employing good manners to cause an awkward predicament.

🎈不时,有时,间或,偶尔 from time to time

Ten years ago when I was a guest, the host filled my bowl with fish, lobster, chicken, and duck when I put down chopsticks and declared myself full. Not until the host tried to persuade me time and time again did I say, “Please give me a bowl of rice instead!”

Looking back on it, I feel I was a bit too impetuous, yet if I were to come across the same situation and get annoyed today, I cannot say for sure I would not resort to the same tactics.
