Taking a Stroll

By Wang Liaoyi

For the natives of Beijing, to walk casually in the street is to take a stroll.

🎈casual adj.

🎈stroll n./v.

溜达,散步 take a stroll

stroller n.

As a matter of fact, strolling can be different from walking, because one often walks where there are few people, but strolls where crowds mill about.

Fans were milling around outside the hotel.

蹓跶又和乡下人逛街不同;乡下人逛街是一只耳朵当先,一只耳朵殿后,两只眼睛带着千般神秘,下死劲地盯着商店的玻璃橱;

When country folks go window shopping in the city, they walk with one ear leading and the other bringing up the rear. Their eyes, shining with unfathomable curiosity, are glued to the passing showcases.

🎈浏览商店橱窗(通常无意购买)go/do window shopping

🎈站在队尾,落在最后,殿后 bring up the rear

英义

to be at the back of a line of people, or last in a race

However, city people stroll at leisure, without any particular purpose. They go out cheerfully, and return home gratified. They stroll with their feet, but for their eyes’ enjoyment.

🎈乡下人country folks

城里人city people

Since he now had the space above his thighs all to himself, he could smoke and read at leisure.

🎈cheerfully adj.

to laugh/nod/whistle cheerfully欢快地笑/点头/吹口哨

In Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces, the people call strolling ‘casting wild eyes’; the word wild alone demonstrates their eyes’ freedom and the disconnection of what they see from the thoughts in their mind.

🎈扫视,飞快看,瞥cast one’s eyes (at sb)

望了望,看了看 cast a glance at sb.

The old man cast a glance at me and gave an uncaring smile. “Fly away? But why should it? It can’t leave the food bowl.”

We stroll, first of all, to be with people. We watch not only our acquaintances but passing strangers as well; not only those of the opposite sex, but also those of the same gender. One lady once said to me, “Don’t think only you gentlemen love watching ladies in the street. Women are even worse!”

Modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than 2 biological sexes, in fact, there are 6.

The legislation would prohibit wage discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy or childbirth.

Truly, nothing in the world can attract more of their attraction than another woman’s lovely suit, fashionable shoes, or stylish hairdo. Even their slender figures are admired in modern times.

In old-style Chinese fiction, commenting on a woman’s appearance was considered an uncouth exhibition by a street thug. In today’s world, influenced as we are by the concept of pure beauty demonstrated by Apollo and the Muse, we do not consider it inappropriate to discreetly comment on another’s looks, as long as our judgment is only shared amongst close friends.

🎈uncouth adj.

of a person or their behaviour 人或其行为rude or socially unacceptable

an uncouth young man一个无教养的年轻人

常用搭配为be discreet about…

You ought to make a few discreet enquiries before you sign anything.

When I was little, I once overheard a gentleman wittily remark that the sun should be feminine, for her dazzling rays deter us from studying her too closely; the moon, on the other hand, should be deemed to be a male, for he permits our studied gaze and hides no secrets.

🎈feminine adj.

deliberate and carefully planned [only before noun]

例句

She introduced herself with studied casualness.

On reflection, I now think that the moon should also be female, because a beauty is supposed to be like a bright moon on the cloudless night, capturing everyone’s full attention, rather than like a valley orchid standing aloof and admiring its own fragrance.

🎈吸引某人注意 catch/capture sb’s attention或catch one’s eyes

例句

He sat at one of the round tables and tried to attract her attention.

keep/hold (oneself) aloof或者remain/stand aloof

Without the masses, appreciation, one will only be serving the few instead of the many. And one will be taking the wrong direction by keeping aloof from the masses and indulging in self-admiration.

We sometimes stroll for the sake of admiring goods. No matter how rich we will become, there are always things we cannot afford. Just a look at the things we crave can be a feast for our eyes.

🎈常用afford sth或afford to do sth表示「经得住、承受的起、负担得起」,如老舍《住的梦》中:没有余钱买菊吃蟹cannot afford chrysanthemum or crab。

Our ancestors said, “He who munches while passing by the butcher shop gets no meat, but still feels the pleasure.” Now, we say, “Those who visit a shop but buy nothing will still feel satisfied.” In this, ladies seem to have a stronger passion than gentlemen.

肉铺,肉店 the butcher’s

For instance, Dong’an Market is often a ladies’ mecca. However, we do not have to buy luxury goods often or even cheap items; some articles are merely worth admiring, and if we buy a cartload of them we will soon regret our purchases.

a place that many people like to visit, especially for a particular reason

On occasion, a dress might catch your wife’s fancy, or an antique might catch your eyes. When this happens, you will have to let the money in your purse change owners, and then record the non-budget item in the family’s account book.

🎈偶尔,偶然,有时on occasion(s)
