When I see a spider standing proudly in the middle of the cobweb ready to spread the thread to the corner, the window, or any dark place leading to light (often the best place to snare these wretched insects), I will poke the cobweb with a stick, get it down from its comfortable hidden ambush location, and then trample it to death. Of all the species here, the most annoying and characteristic ones are those who weave webs.

🎈of+…

The smallest is about the size of a grain of maize while the biggest is about the size of a chestnut. The others range from the size of a mung bean to that of a broad bean.

🎈 grain [C] 小颗粒

a single very small piece of a substance such as sand or salt

盐粒/沙粒/一粒糖a grain of salt / sand / sugar

该句译文中的range from the size of a mung bean to that of a broad bean也可以写成range in size from a mung bean to a broad bean或range between the size of a mung bean to that of a broad bean。

The spiders about the size of a chestnut often lie low and seldom show up in the daytime. Though we can see the cobweb more than half a meter wide in diameter, and poke through the web hung at a high hidden place with a long bamboo pole, we often find it hard to harm them.

保持低/高姿态 keep a keep/high profile

high-profile adj.

low-profile adj.

A Hundred Children, another masterpiece by Wang Xisan was painted on a bottle 8cm high and 7cm in diameter, which was modeled on a crystal bottle from the Qing Dynasty unearthed in Nanpi County, Hebei Province.

diameter “dia” = across n. 直径

seismometer “seismo” = shake n.

meter n.

metric adj.

thermometer “thermo” = heat n.

barometer “baro” = weight n. 气压计

voltmeter “volt” = 伏特 n. 电压表

speedometer “speed” = 速度 n. 速度表

milometer “mil” =mile n.

The spiders about the size of a grain of maize are almost invisible. They do not necessarily make a net or, if they do, it will be in a high, inconspicuous place, making them difficult to catch.

🎈 inconspicuous adj.

not attracting attention; not easy to notice

Since big spiders often slip away and the small ones are elusive, most of those I have caught and trampled to death are the medium-sized ones.

🎈 elusive adj. 难找的difficult to find

例句

Eric, as elusive as ever, was nowhere to be found.

The tool I used to catch spiders is a long bamboo pole. Although this is not an ideal tool, I can now use it very successfully.

🎈 ideal adj.

这项工作的最合适人选the ideal candidate for the job

绝佳机会an ideal opportunity

Catching spiders with a bamboo pole takes great skills. Unless you have tried it before, the spider will slip away even if the cobweb is ripped open.

🎈此处take great skills意同need great skills。

After the spider gets away, you will find it hard to catch it again unless it comes out to make a new web. I am more or less experienced in catching spiders.

🎈多多少少more or less

二十岁以后结成的友谊,大概已不免搀有各种各样的颜色分子在内;

Friendship among people in their 20’s, however, is more or less coloured by personal motives.

be experienced in…

be adept at / in …

be versed in…

be proficient in…

be very good at…

be skillful at…

excel in…

master…

For instance, when I poke the long bamboo pole through the cobweb, I first of all cut off the way of its advance to stop it from running back to its nest. Secondly, I refrain from suddenly hitting its body lest it fall down to the ground and gets killed. Finally, I take every precaution to furl up the spider and the cobweb around the pole.

🎈 lest, in case, for fear that“以防,万一,唯恐”引导目的状语从句常用虚拟语气,谓语动词用“should+动词原形”。lest, for fear that从句中的should可以省去,in case从句中的should通常不省略,但是in case引导的从句也可用陈述语气。

例句

He took the raincoat with him lest it (should) rain.

I obeyed her for fear that she (should) be angry.

In case he comes, let me know.

🎈采取一切预防措施…… take every precaution to do sth

Even at this time, you must take care not to shake the pole too violently or knock the pole against anything, because if the spider is frightened, it may unexpectedly drop down and get away. Truly, as a result of such falls, a great number of spiders have escaped from my hand.

🎈当心(不)做某事take care (not) to do sth

It’s midnight, take care not to catch cold.

When this happened, I felt as if I had discovered a great truth and asked myself: Isn’t falling a good way to save myself?

It sounds as if it is raining.

Under such circumstances, some spiders, who didn’t fall as far as they could have, actually lost their lives. Such cases were not rare.

情况/条件下in / under … circumstances

由于…情况 due to … circumstances

无论如何不,决不in/under no circumstances

在…场合下on / upon … occasion

在这种/罕见/后来的场合on such / rare/a later occasions

For instance, I once furled up a big spider and its cobweb around a bamboo pole. Unfortunately the pole was too long and I carelessly knocked it against something, so the spider unexpectedly retracted its legs, huddled up and then let itself drop.

🎈 furl v.

上 knock…against…

例句

I knocked my head against the doorpost and hurt it.

huddle up/together [主语是复数]

例句

We huddled together for warmth.

I huddled under a blanket on the floor.

However, as it fell down, it stopped in mid-air; with the help of its threads it held its buttock up and remained there motionless. When this occurred, I purposely held the pole steady.

🎈发生 happen/occur/take place/come about

例句

Can you tell me how the accident came about?

After a moment’s peace when it thought that everything was fine, it began to hook up threads with its legs in turn and accumulate them under its belly. Simultaneously it tried to climb back up.

🎈勾起某物hook up sth
