八卦

Eight Trigrams

由“—”（阳爻）和“–”（阴爻）每三个一组合成的一套符号系统。三“爻” 合成一卦，共有八种组合，故称“八卦“八卦”的名称分别是乾（☰）、坤（☷）、震（☳）、巽（☴）、坎（☵）、离（☲）、艮（☶）、兑（☱）。

Each of the eight trigrams consists of three lines and each line is either divided (–) or undivided (—), representing yin or yang respectively.The eight trigrams are: qian (☰),kun (☷), zhen (☳), xun (☴),kan (☵), li (☲), gen (☶),and dui (☱).

🎈首句将「符号系统」直接译为eight trigrams（八卦），简洁明了，并在翻译“组成”时使用了符合英文行文习惯的“consist of”，consist前面是所组成的整体，而of后面跟所组成的成分。

🎈首句还采用了增译的方法，在将阳爻和阴爻译为“不分离的横线”（divided）和“分离的横线”（undivided）后，为了便于更好的理解阳爻和阴爻的概念，因此将两者所承载的概念也一并增译出来，即代表了阳（yang）和阴（yin）

古人认为“八卦”象征着自然或社会中的一些基本事物或现象，其基本的象征意义分别是天、地、雷、风、水、火、山、泽。古人借由“八卦”彼此之间的交互演变及其象 征意义，来理解和阐发自然与社会的运行变化及其法则。

According to the ancient Chinese, the eight trigrams symbolized basic things and phenomena of nature or society and represented heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain, and lake respectively. The ancient Chinese also used the interchanges and transformations of the eight trigrams and what they represented to understand and expound on natural and social changes and to explain why and how they took place.

🎈因为八卦是由中国人所提出的概念，因此在翻译“古人”时，增译出了“Chinese”，表示并强调是中国人所发明。

🎈在翻译「象征」和「象征意义」时，为了遵从英文的忌讳重复的行文习惯，分别译为symbolize和represent。

🎈在翻译「法则」时，没有拘泥于汉语原文译为law，而是翻译出了更深层次的意义，即「为什么和如何发生的」（why and how they took place）
