采芳人[1]杳[2]，

顿觉游情少。

客里看春多草草，

总被诗愁分了。

去年燕子天涯，

今年燕子谁家？

三月休听夜雨，

如今不是催花。

[1]采芳人：采撷芳菲的游客。陈陶有诗：“吴洲采芳客，桂樟木兰船。”

[2]杳（yǎo）：远得没有尽头。

Zhang Yan

Maidens gathering flowers now are few,

I find no joy within the natural view,

But roam alone and cannot relish spring,

Distracted by the sad songs I must sing.

Last year the swallows flew from here afar.

Under whose roof I wonder where they are?

Don’t listen to the third month’s nightly showers!

They won’t hasten spring time’s lovely flowers.

Zhang Yan (1248—1320?) was not only a lyrical poet but also a poetry critic. In this lyric he depicted his sorrow of wandering like swallows after the conquest of the Song Dynasty by the Tartars, thus revealing his yearning for the lost land and his antipathy towards the reality.
