【捣练子】（生上）

听漏下半更多，

月影向中那。

恁时节夜香烧罢么？

“一点猩红一点金，

十个春纤十个针。

只因世上美人面，

改尽人间君子心。”

俺柳梦梅是个读书君子，一味志诚。止因北上南安，凑着东邻西子。嫣然一笑，遂成暮雨之来；未是五更，便逐晓风而去。今宵有约，未知迟早。正是：

“金莲[1]若肯移三寸，

银烛先教刻五分[2]。”

则一件，姐姐若到，要精神对付他。偷盹一会，有何不可。

（睡介）

【称人心】（魂旦上）

冥途挣挫[3]，

要死却心儿无那。

也则为俺那人儿忒可，

教他闷房头守着闲灯火。

（入门介）呀，他端然睡瞌，

恁春寒也不把绣衾来摸。

多应他祗候[4]着我。

待叫醒他。秀才，秀才！

（生醒介）姐姐，失敬也。

（起揖介）（生）待整衣罗，远远相迎个。这二更天风露多，还则怕夜深花睡么？

（旦）秀才，俺那里长夜好难过，缱着你无眠清坐。

（生）姐姐，你来的脚踪儿恁轻，是怎的？

〔集唐〕“（旦）自然无迹又无尘（朱庆馀），

（生）白日寻思夜梦频（令狐楚）。

（旦）行到窗前知未寝（无名氏），

（生）一心惟待月夫人（皮日休）。”

姐姐，今夜来的迟些。

【绣带儿】（旦）

镇消停，

不是俺闲情忒慢俄。

那些儿忘却俺欢哥[5]。

夜香残，

回避了尊亲。

绣床偎收拾起生活[6]，

停脱[7]。

顺风儿斜将金佩拖，

紧摘离[8]百忙的淡妆明抹。

（生）费你高情，则良夜无酒奈何？

（旦）都忘了。俺携酒一壶，花果二色，在楯栏之上，取来消遣。

（旦取酒、果、花上）

（生）生受了。是甚果？

（旦）青梅数粒。

（生）这花？

（旦）美人蕉。

（生）梅子酸似俺秀才，蕉花红似俺姐姐。串饮一杯。

（共杯饮介）

【白练序】（旦）

金荷[9]、斟香糯[10]。

（生）你酝酿春心玉液波。

拼微酡，

东风外翠香红酦[11]。

（旦）也摘不下奇花果，

这一点蕉花和梅豆呵，

君知么，爱的人全风韵，

花有根科[12]。

【醉太平】（生）

细哦，

这子儿花朵，

似美人憔悴，

酸子情多。

喜蕉心暗展，

一夜梅犀点污[13]。

如何？酒潮微晕笑生涡。

待噷着脸恣情的呜嘬[14]，

些儿个，

翠偃了情波，

润红蕉点，

香生梅唾。

【白练序】（旦）

活泼、死腾那，

这是第一所人间风月窝。

昨宵个微芒暗影轻罗，

把势儿[15]忒显豁。

为什么人到幽期话转多？

（生）好睡也。

（旦）好月也。

消停坐，

不妒色嫦娥，

和俺人三个。

注：杜丽娘起死回生后，

与柳梦梅结为夫妻。

梦梅金榜题名，

考取状元，

双喜临门。

注释：

[1]金莲：三寸金莲，形容女人的脚小。

[2]银烛先教刻五分：南朝梁竟陵王萧子良与友人夜集，刻烛为诗。做四韵的刻一寸。

[3]挣挫：挣扎。

[4]祗候：等候。动词。

[5]欢哥：对情郎的昵称。

[6]生活：针线生活。上文偎，傍。

[7]停脱：停妥、停当、完毕。

[8]摘离：离开，脱身。

[9]荷：杯的代称。古代有荷叶杯。

[10]糯：糯米做的酒。

[11]酦：以酒做原料再加蒸制的烈性酒。这里是形容花很红，再以花红喻酒醉。

[12]根科：根株，作根芽解。上文人，谐（果）仁，与下文花并列。

[13]梅犀点污：隐喻欢会。梅犀，梅子。

[14]待噷着脸恣情的呜嘬：狂吻。

[15]把势儿：姿态，指欢会。

Scene 5 The Next Tryst

(Enter Liu the Dreamer of Willow.)

Liu (Singing to the tune of Washerwoman’s Song):

The water-clock announces midnight:

On mid-court the moon sheds her light.

Is incense lit and prayer read?

“Each inch of incense burnt is scarlet red.

Your fingers look like bamboo shoots so slender;

A beauty’s face

So full of grace

May change a scholar’s heart so tender.”

I am Liu the Dreamer of Willow, a student devoted to studies coming to Nan’an on my way to the capital. I have the sheer luck of being visited by a beauty of the neighborhood, who smiled so sweet and allowed me to bring fresh shower to her virgin flower, and who came late in the night and went early with the morning breeze. I do not know when she will come tonight.

“If her lotus feet move an inch their step light,

An inch would be burned of the silver candle bright.”

But when she comes. I must welcome her in high spirit. So why don’t I doze off a while before she comes? (Dozing.)

(Enter the Soul of Du Belle.)

Belle (Singing to the tune of The Heart Pleased):

I struggle on my way;

Though dead, my heart still goes astray.

How could I do wrong to my scholar bright

By letting him sit idly by candlelight?

(Entering the room.)

I find him sitting there asleep,

Uncovered though spring is chilly when night is deep.

What is he doing but waiting for me?

Let me wake him up with glee! My dear Master!

Liu (Waking up): My dear sister! Excuse me for my negligence.

I will adjust my dress and come out to welcome you,

But I’m afraid of windy night and chilly dew.

I fear the flower will fall asleep

When night is deep.

Belle: My dear Master,it’s hard for me to pass the lonely night,

So I would come and sit with you by candlelight.

Liu: How could you come with such light pace?

Belle:“I would not raise dust nor leave trace.

Liu:I think of you by day and dream of you by night.

Belle:Coming to your window, I find you asleep.

Liu:I am only waiting for you in my heart deep.”

My dear sister, why are you late tonight?”

Belle (Singing to the tune of Embroidered Belt):

Be not annoyed for my coming late.

How could I forget my dear mate?

Before the incense is lit,

How could I my parents quit?

After I put my needlework aside

By my bedside,

I left my room in haste,

Only with golden rings around my waist.

I come without powdering my face,

In simple dress with simple grace.

Liu: Thank you, my love. But without wine, how to pass the night blessed?

Belle: I forgot to tell you, I have brought a pot of wine with flower and fruit and left them on the balustrade. Let me go and fetch them to pass this fine night.

(Going out and reentering with wine, flower and fruit)

Liu: My hearty thanks! Will you please tell me what fruit it is?

Belle: Green mumes.

Liu: And what flower?

Belle: Beautiful canna flower.

Liu: I am so green a hand as the mume fruit while you are as beautiful as the canna flower. Let us drink together a cup of wine! (They drink from the same cup)

Belle (Singing to the tune of White Silk):

Fill the golden cup with sweet wine!

Liu:Brew in your vernal heart waves of jade fine!

Tipsy, what is there I have to dread?

Where blows the eastern breeze, leaves are green and flowers red.

Belle:There is no fruit or flower rare.

See the mume fruit and canna flower there!

Do you not know we love the heart of the fruit

And the flower with its root?

Liu (Singing to the tune of Drunken in Time of Peace):

The mume fruit is small,

The fruit like a languid beauty in the hall.

The mume is sentimental,

Into the flower’s open heart it will fall.

The mume brings juice in shower

All the night long for the thirsting flower.

The joy is hard to seek:

You smile with dimple on the cheek

I rain my kisses on your lips;

The mume’s juice on your green waves drips.

The canna flower turns red

With its leaves outspread.

The mume no longer sour

Turns into a sweet flower.

Belle (Singing to the tune of White Silk):

How lively heaves my breast!

For the moon and the breeze it’s a paradise blest.

Last night behind the silken screen in the dim shade.

How can I forget the strong love with me you made?

Why should we whisper more

Than in our tryst before?

Liu:Let us sink into a sound sleep!

Belle:How bright is the moon in night deep!

Let us sit for a longer while

In face of the Moon Goddess’ smile!

If she is not jealous of me,

We should be a company of happy three.

(Note) Liu the Dreamer of Willow and the Soul of Du Belle make a vow that they would be man and wife when she comes to life. After her revival, she is married to Liu, who wins the laurel crown at the civil service examinations in the end.
