倚蓬窗[1]无语嗟呀，

七件儿[2]全无，

做甚么人家？

柴似灵芝，

油如甘露，

米若丹砂[3]。

酱瓮儿才罄撒[4]，

盐瓶儿又告消乏。

茶也无多，

醋也无多。

七件事尚且艰难，

怎生教我折柳攀花[5]!

注释：

[1]蓬窗：茅舍的窗户。

[2]七件儿：俗称柴、米、油、盐、酱、醋、茶为“开门七件事”。

[3]灵芝、甘露、丹砂：都是名贵的药材。此处用以比喻物价太高。

[4]罄撒：缺乏、短少，与下句的“消乏”同意。

[5]折柳攀花：指狎妓，泛指优游荒唐的生活。

Without the seven necessities,

How could households be called families?

The fuel is as dear as wood cut from on high,

Oil as nectar of dew,

And rice as pearls all new.

The sauce is used up in the jar,

The salt bottle is empty, you see,

There’s no more tea,

Nor vinegar.

I can hardly afford these seven necessities,

How could I enjoy flowers and willow trees?
