 秋夜闻筝

（一）

透疏帘风摇杨柳阴，

泻长空月转梧桐影。

冷雕盘香销金兽[1]火，

咽铜龙[2]漏滴玉壶冰。

何处银筝？

声嘹呖[3]云霄应，

逐轻风过短棂[4]，

耳才闻天上仙乐，

身疑在人间胜境。

注释：

[1]金兽：金属做的兽形小手炉。

[2]铜龙：古人以铜壶滴漏计时，壶嘴滴水处饰以龙嘴，叫作铜龙。

[3]嘹呖：嘹亮，响亮。

[4]逐轻风过短棂：筝声随风传来，像鸟儿一样追逐着清风，飘进了窗棂。短棂：小窗户。

Tune: A Sprig of Flowers
 The Zither Heard on an Autumn Night

Ban Weizhi

（I）

On window screen the breeze sways shadows of willow trees;

In wide sky the moon round casts plane’s shade on the ground.

On chiseled plate of gold incense is burned and cold;

The bronze dragon sobs when icy waterclock throbs.

From where comes the zither song?

It’s echoed loud and clear among the clouds for long.

It wafts with the light breeze far and near.

The divine music has just reached my ear,

My body seems to float in celestial sphere.

（二）梁州

恰便似溅石窟寒泉乱涌，

集瑶台鸾凤和鸣，

走金盘乱撒骊珠[1]迸。

嘶风骏偃，潜沼鱼惊。

天边雁落，树梢云停[2]。

早则是字样分明，更哪堪音律关情？

凄凉比汉昭君塞上琵琶，

清韵如王子乔[3]风前玉笙，

悠扬似张君瑞[4]月下琴声。

再听，愈惊。

叮咛一曲《阳关令》。

感离愁，动别兴。

万事萦怀百样增，一洗尘清。

注释：

[1]骊珠：珍珠。

[2]嘶风骏偃，潜沼鱼惊。天边雁落，树梢云停：用四个夸张句表现筝声的美妙：它使骏马停止了奔腾，使深水中的鱼儿惊觉起来，使高飞的大雁从天边掉落，使飘游的云朵在树梢停留。

[3]王子乔：神话人物，喜吹笙作凤鸣声，后得到仙人指点，修炼升仙。

[4]张君瑞：《西厢记》中的张生，在月夜弹琴来向崔莺莺表达爱慕。

（II）Tune: Song of Frontier

It’s like cold fountain splashing on the stone,

Phoenix and pheasant singing in the moon,

Or pearls rolling in plate of gold.

It stops the steed running in wind so cold,

Startles the fish swimming in the pond

And wild geese flying on horizon and beyond,

And detains the cloud floating atop the trees.

Its word on word is clearly heard.

How can we bear its heart-rending tune?

It’s drear as the Princess’ lament on the frontier,

Clear as the Prince playing on his jade flute,

Melodious as the lover’s moonlit lute.

Listen again and you will be startled anew,

It is the song of Sunny Pass bidding adieu.

You will be grieved to hear the lovers say goodbye,

All hidden in your heart would burst into a sigh.

All dust washed away, what care have you?

（三）尾

她那里轻笼纤指冰弦应[1]，

俺这里慢写花笺锦字迎。

越感起文园少年病。

是谁家玉卿？

只恁般可憎[2]!

唤的人一枕蝴蝶梦儿醒。

注释：

[1]她那里轻笼纤指冰弦应：诗人展开了想象——弹筝之人一定是位玉指轻拢冰弦的美人。

[2]可憎：可爱，惹人怜惜。

（III）Tune: Epilogue

Her fair fingers lightly touch the icy strings;

I’d write to her a letter interwoven with flowers,

Remembering the young writer in his bowers.

Who can be this lover of springs?

O why so lovely should she be!

Her song sinks me into and wakens me

From my dream of butterfly on the wings.
