 （八首其二）

左思

郁郁[1]涧底松[2]，离离山上苗[3]，

以彼径寸茎[4]，荫[5]此百尺条。

世胄[6]蹑[7]高位，英俊沉下僚[8]。

地势使之然，由来非一朝。

金张[9]藉旧业，七叶[10]珥[11]汉貂[12]。

冯公[13]岂不伟[14]，白首不见招[15]。

注释：

[1] 郁郁：严密浓绿的样子。

[2] 涧底松：比喻才高位卑的寒士。

[3] 山上苗：比喻占据高位的士族子弟。

[4] 径寸茎：直径一寸粗的树干，彼指“山上苗”。

[5] 荫：遮蔽。

[6] 世胄：士族子弟。

[7] 蹑：履，登。

[8] 沉下僚：沉没于下级的官职。

[9] 金张：指汉宣帝时金日殚、张安世两大家族为当时权门。

[10] 七叶：七世。

[11] 珥：插。

[12] 貂：指貂尾。汉代侍中、中常侍等高官在冠上插貂尾为饰。

[13] 冯公：指汉冯唐，他曾指责汉文帝不会用人，年老了还做中郎署长的小官。

[14] 伟：特异。

[15] 不见招：不被起用。

On History (II)

Zuo Si

I’d return to my cot.

Gloomy the pine in valley deep;

Lush is the grass on mountain steep.

The latter’s only one inch long;

But higher than the former strong.

The noble in position high,

The able in low office sigh.

In different places they stay;

Their places are not built in a day.

Jin and Zhang were families old;[1]

They had served seven reigns, all told.

Not that white-haired Feng was not great,

But low was royal estimate.

[1] This is a satire against the nobles in high position (Jin and Zhang) while the able (Feng) was in low office.
