一曲新词酒一杯，

去年天气旧亭台，

夕阳西下几时回？

无可奈何花落去，

似曾相识燕归来，

小园香径独徘徊。

[1]浣溪沙：唐玄宗时教坊曲名，后用为词调。沙，一作“纱”。

Yan Shu

I compose a new song and drink a cup of wine

In the bower of last year when weather is as fine.

When will you come back now the sun’s on the decline?

Deeply I sign for the fallen flowers in vain;

Vaguely I seem to know the swallows come again.

Loitering on the garden path, I alone remain.

Yan Shu (991—1055) passed the civil service examinations in his early teens and became prime minister under the reign of Renzong of Song Dynasty (reigned 1022—1063). This poem was written for a beautiful songstress for whom he had composed lyrical songs one year before.
