（一）宫词

闷登楼倚阑干

看暮景，

天阔水云平。

浸池面楼台倒影，

书云笺雁字斜横[1]。

衰柳拂月户云窗，

残荷临水阁凉亭。

景凄凉助人愁越逞[2]，

下妆楼步月空庭。

鸟惊环佩响，

鹤吹铎铃鸣。

注释：

[1]书云笺雁字斜横：比喻大雁在空中排成“一”字形，或“人”字形飞过，就像以云天为信笺写字。

[2]越逞：愈加厉害。

（I）Palace Grief

Gloomy, I mount the tower, lean on the balustrade

And view the evening scene:

The sky is wide, clouds blend with water green.

The shadow of the bower drowned in the pool,

The wild geese write slanting words on clouds white.

The withered willow trees caress windows and door;

The lotus fades before waterside pavilions cool.

The dreary scene adds to my grief without words.

Going down, I pace in courtyard steeped in moonlight.

My ringing pendants startle the birds,

The crane cries and echo the bells of jade.

（二）逍遥乐

对景如青鸾舞镜[1]，

天隔羊车[2]，

人囚凤城[3]。

好姻缘辜负了今生，

痛伤悲雨泪如倾。

心如醉满怀何日醒？

西风传玉漏丁宁[4]。

恰过半夜，

胜似三秋，

才交四更。

注释：

[1]对景如青鸾舞镜：意谓对景生悲。青鸾舞镜，南朝刘敬叔《异苑》记载，有位王侯得到一只鸾，为它装饰起金玉，准备了佳肴，它却三年不鸣。夫人提议，拿一面镜子来，让鸾以为看到同类，这样它也许会鸣叫。谁知，鸾看了镜中的影子，悲鸣不已，很快就死去了。

[2]天隔羊车：意谓得不到皇帝的宠幸。羊车，史书记载晋武帝常乘坐羊车，任其在后宫行走，羊车停在哪里，他就在哪里歇宿。

[3]凤城：指京城。据传，秦穆公的女儿弄玉吹箫引凤至京城，所以凤城、丹凤城就成了京城的别称。

[4]丁宁：拟声词，形容水滴的声音。

（II）Tune: Joy to be Free

Seeing the gloomy scene, I’m sad as phoenix green.

From heaven I’m kept far apart

As if imprisoned in the phoenix town.

Could I have a happy marriage with my mate?

I’m so much grieved that tears like rain stream down.

Drunk with brimming cups, when will wake my heart?

I hear the water clock of jade stop

Dripping in the western breeze drop by drop.

Midnight just passed away,

It is colder than autumn late.

O when will break the day?

（三）金菊香

秋虫夜语不堪听，

啼树宫鸦不住声。

入孤帏强眠寻梦境，

被相思鬼绰[1]了魂灵，

纵有梦也难成。

注释：

[1]绰：夺走。

（III）Tune: Fragrance of Golden Chrysanthemum

How can I stand

The autumn crickets’ chirping shrill,

And crows in palace trees cawing still?

Going to lonely bed, how can I sleep?

My soul is seized by Lovesickness deep.

How can I go to the dreamland?

（四）醋葫芦

睡不着，

坐不宁，

又不疼不痛病萦萦。

待不思量霎儿[1]

心未肯，

没乱[2]到更阑人静。

注释：

[1]霎儿：一霎时，一会儿。

[2]没乱：烦躁。

（IV）Tune: A Gourd of Vinegar

I cannot fall asleep

Nor sit with ease till deep

In the night I remain

Heartily sick without physical pain.

My heart will not consent

To my stifling awhile my lovesick sentiment.

（五）高平煞

照愁人残蜡碧荧荧，

沉水烟消金兽鼎[1]。

败叶走庭除[2]，

修竹扫苍楹[3]。

唱道是[4]人和闷可难争。

则我瘦身躯

怎敢共愁肠竞？

伤心情脉脉，

病体困腾腾[5]。

画屋[6]风轻，

翠被寒增，

也温不过早来袜儿冷。

注释：

[1]金兽鼎：筑有兽形装饰的铜鼎。

[2]除：台阶。

[3]苍楹：青色的堂前柱子，此处代指堂前。

[4]唱道是：实在是。唱：通“畅”。

[5]腾腾：指很严重的样子。

[6]画屋：有彩饰的精致房屋。

（V）Tune: High Level Epilogue

The green flame of the flickering candlelight grieves

The incense burned up in the censer of gold.

In the courtyard run riot withered leaves,

The pale pillars caressed by bamboos tall.

Can it be true that woman can fight the gloom?

Can I resist dreariness, lean as I loom?

Laden with grief, I am heart-broken;

Drowsy and sick, when can I be awoken?

Though the wind is light in the painted hall,

My green quilt is still cold.

How can it warm up my stockings at all?

（六）尾

睡魔盼不来，

丫环叫不应，

香消烛灭冷清清。

唯嫦娥与人无世情，

可怜咱孤零[1]。

透疏帘斜照月偏明。

注释：

[1]孤零：孤单。

（VI）Tune: Epilogue

Sleep will not come to me at all;

My maid will not answer my call.

Incense burned up, lights out, I feel chill, sad and drear.

Only the sympathetic Moon Goddess

Pities my loneliness.

She sheds through my window screen slanting moonlight clear.
