佳人

绝代有佳人，

幽居在空谷。

自云良家子，

零落依草木[1]。

关中昔丧败[2]，

兄弟遭杀戮。

官高何足论，

不得收骨肉。

世情恶衰歇，

万事随转烛[3]。

夫婿轻薄儿，

新人美如玉。

合昏[4]尚知时，

鸳鸯不独宿。

但见新人笑，

那闻旧人哭。

在山泉水清，

出山泉水浊。

侍婢卖珠回，

牵萝[5]补茅屋。

摘花不插发，

采柏动[6]盈掬。

天寒翠袖薄，

日暮倚修竹[7]。

[3]转烛：残烛火苗随风摇摆，此处指世事无常。

[4]合昏：夜合花，其叶朝开夜合。

[7]修竹：高高的竹子。

The Fair Lady

Du Fu

The fairest lady in full bloom

Lives in a valley in deep gloom.

Born from a noble family,

She sinks into wild greenery.

Riots broke out on Central Plain,

Her brothers by ill luck were slain.

In vain were they officials high;

Their corpses still unburied lie.

The world cares not for those who fall;

With dying candle passes all.

My husband’s tickle,I’m afraid,

He took a new wife fair as jade.

At dusk mimosa folds up leaves;

At night a lonely lovebird grieves.

He loves his new wife’s smile so deep

That he hears not his old wife weep.

Clear water flowing from the fountain

Turns filthy when out of the mountain.

My maid’s sold pearls that we may dine,

We mend our thatched cot with vine.

I pick for my hair no flowers sweet

But handfuls of cypress seed to eat.

With cold shiver my thin sleeves green,

At dusk on long bamboo I’d bean.
