昨夜雨疏风骤[1]，

浓睡[2]不消残酒[3]。

试问卷帘人[4]，

却道海棠依旧。

知否，知否？

应是绿肥红瘦[5]。

[2]浓睡：沉睡。

[3]残酒：残留的酒意。

[4]卷帘人：这里指侍女。

[5]绿肥红瘦：绿叶茂盛而红花稀少。

Tune: Like A Dream

Li Qingzhao

Last night the wind was strong and rain was fine,

Sound sleep did not dispel the taste of wine.

I ask the maid who’s rolling up the screen.

“The same crabapple tree,” she says, “is seen.”

“Don’t you know,

Don’t you know

The red should languish and the green must grow?”

Li Qingzhao (1084—1151) was the most famous poetess of the Song Dynasty. This lyric revealing her love of spring flowers reminds us of a Tang poet’s Spring Morning:

This morn of spring in bed I’m lying,

Not to awake till birds are crying.

After one night of wind and showers,

How many are the fallen flowers!
