金陵[1]城上西楼[2]，

倚清秋。

万里夕阳垂地，

大江流。

中原乱[3]，

簪缨散[4]，

几时收？

试倩[5]悲风吹泪，

过扬州[6]。

[1]金陵：现在的南京市。

[2]西楼：一般泛指高楼，李煜《乌夜啼》有：“无言独上西楼，月如钩。”这里指南京的城楼。

[3]中原乱：指1127年，金兵南侵，汴京陷落，徽、钦二帝被掳北上事。

[4]簪缨散：指仕宦冠服，这里借指仕族逃散流亡。

[5]倩：通“请”。

[6]扬州：当时处于宋金对峙前方，屡受金兵进犯，建炎三年（1129）几乎被焚烧破坏殆尽。

I lean on western railings on the city wall

Of Jinling in the fall.

Shedding its rays o’er miles and miles, the sun hangs low

To see the great River flow.

The Central Plain is in a mess,

Officials disperse in distress.

When to recover our frontiers?

I ask sad winds to blow over Yangzhou my tears.

Zhu Dunru (1081—1159), a native of Luoyang, left the Central Plain occupied by Jurchen invaders for Jinling (present-day Nanjing) in the South. This lyric expressed his sorrow at the sight of the setting sun shedding its rays on the riverside Yangzhou overrun by Jurchen aggres-sors.
