 过洞庭

洞庭青草，

近中秋、

更无一点风色。

玉鉴琼田三万顷，

着我扁舟一叶。

素月[1]分辉，

明河共影，

表里俱澄澈。

悠然心会，

妙处难与君说。

应念岭表[2]经年，

孤光自照，

肝胆皆冰雪。

短鬓萧疏襟袖冷，

稳泛沧溟空阔。

尽挹[3]西江[4]，

细斟北斗，

万象为宾客。

叩舷独啸，

不知今夕何夕。

[2]岭表：岭外，即五岭以南的两广地区。

[3]挹（yì）：舀。

[4]西江：长江连通洞庭湖，中上游在洞庭以西，故称西江。

 Passing Lake Dongting

Zhang Xiaoxiang

Lake Dongting, Lake Green Grass,

Near the Mid-autumn night,

Unruffled for no winds pass,

Like thirty thousand acres of jade bright

Dotted with the leaf-like boat of mine.

The skies with pure moonbeams o’erflow;

The water surface paved with moonshine:

Brightness above, brightness below.

My heart with the moon becomes one,

Felicity to share with none.

Thinking of the Southwest where I passed a year,

To lonely pure moonlight akin,

I feel my heart and soul snow-and-ice-clear.

Although my hair is short and sparse, my gown too thin,

In the immense expanse I keep floating up.

Drinking wine from the River West

And using Dipper as a wine-cup,

I invite Nature to be my guest.

Beating time aboard and crooning alone,

I sink deep into time and place unknown.

Zhang Xiaoxiang (1132—1169) was also a patriotic poet who passed the civil service exami-nations in 1154 with the highest honors. He was appointed governor of Jiankang (present-day Nanjing) and because he advocated the northern expedition against the Jurchen invaders, he was slandered and banished to the southwest border. This lyric was written in 1166 when, dismissed again from service, he passed Lake Dongting on his way home.
