 陪庾幕[1]诸公游灵岩[2]

渺空烟四远。

是何年、

青天坠长星？

幻苍崖云树，

名娃[3]金屋，

残霸[4]宫城。

箭径酸风射眼，

腻水[5]染花腥。

时靸[6]双鸳响，

廊叶秋声。

宫里吴王沉醉。

倩五湖倦客[7]，

独钓醒醒。

问苍天无语，

华发奈山青。

水涵空，

阑干高处，

送乱鸦斜日落渔汀[8]。

连呼酒，

上琴台[9]去，

秋与云平。

[1]庾（yǔ）幕：指提举常平仓的官衙中的幕友西宾。

[2]灵岩：又名石鼓山，在苏州市西南的木渎镇西北。

[3]名娃：指西施。

[4]残霸：指吴王夫差。

[5]腻水：宫女濯妆的脂粉水。

[6]靸（sǎ）：一种草制的拖鞋。此作指穿着拖鞋。

[7]五湖倦客：指范蠡。

[8]渔汀：水边捕鱼处。

[9]琴台：春秋时期吴王游乐的遗迹，在灵岩山上。

 Visiting the Star Cliff with My Friend

Wu Wenying

Mist spreads as far as sees the eye.

When did this big star fall from the blue sky?

It changed to a green cliff with cloud-like trees

With golden bowers built for lady fair

In Wu’s great palace, now in sad debris.

On Arrow Lane the eyes were hurt in chilly air,

And rouged water stained with fallen flowers sweet.

Leaves fall on hollow ground,

’Tis Autumn’s sound,

It seems as if I heard the lady’s slippered feet.

In Wu’s great palace, drunk the king did lie,

But the tired hermit on the lake

Fished all alone awake.

In vain I ask the silent sky,

My hair turns gray in face of mountains green.

The sky in water mirrored seen,

Leaning on railings high,

I see crows scatter on the beach in setting sun.

I ask for wine both long and loud,

And stand upon Lute Terrace where is none

But autumn high and lonely as the cloud.

The Star Cliff is situated in the west of Suzhou, capital of the ancient Kingdom of Wu. The king of Wu built a palace on the Cliff with a golden bower for his favourite mistress Xi Shi and drank with her in the Gallery of Hollow Ground, beside the Arrow Lane or on the Lute Terrace. At last his kingdom was conquered by the king of Yue and General Fan Li who, after the conquest of Wu, retreated as a hermit to the lakeside and lived together with the beautiful lady Xi Shi.
